FAU’s Barry Kaye College of Business Dedicates Office Depot Center for Executive Education
BOCA RATON, FL (October 10, 2008) – Florida Atlantic University’s Barry Kaye College of Business dedicated its new Office Depot Center for Executive Education today at FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.
“The Office Depot Center for Executive Education symbolizes the fruitful relationship between Florida Atlantic University and Office Depot,” said FAU President Frank T. Brogan. “This facility will become a focal point for the College of Business as it reaches out to the business community to provide for its professional development needs.”
Office Depot, a leading global provider of office products and services headquartered in South Florida, has given a total of $2.8 million to FAU’s College of Business. The first gift, which totaled $2 million, was made in February 2006, with the second donation in January 2007. With matching funds from the State of Florida’s Alec P. Courtelis Capital Facility Enhancement Challenge Grant Program, the gifts doubled in size to $5.6 million.
The Office Depot Center for Executive Education is a 15,500-square-foot facility that will provide state-of-the-art classrooms, seminar and workshop rooms, a multi-tiered case study lecture hall, and administrative offices for the College’s department of executive continuing education. The building also has video conferencing capabilities.
“Office Depot understands the importance of this Center to FAU and the greater community,” said Steve Odland, chief executive officer of Office Depot. “We believe that our relationship with this fine university will not only enhance the educational opportunities in which the Center will serve its students, but it will better Office Depot for being a part of this remarkable experience.”
Dedicated to executive education, training and research, the Office Depot Center expands the College’s offerings to the business community by providing customized programs for South Florida employers, including corporate training events, continuing education classes, degree programs and seminars. This facility enables the College of Business to meet the demands of the business community to satisfy its own training and development needs in partnership with the university.
“Management executive education programs serve the continuing education and training needs of the business community,” said Dr. J. Dennis Coates, dean of FAU’s College of Business. “As these programs have grown in number and variety over the years, it was increasingly evident that a dedicated executive education and training facility as an integral component of the College was needed. We are grateful that the executives of Office Depot recognized the value of this need both for the university and its own corporate training agenda.”
Office Depot has supported FAU and the College of Business for more than 15 years. In 2002, Office Depot provided funding for the Office Depot Eminent Scholar Chair in Small Business Research, now held by Dr. Chandra Mishra, with a gift of $600,000, which received state matching funds. This gift also made FAU the first university in the nation to establish a chair dedicated to the study of small businesses. Office Depot also established the annual Office Depot Small Business Research Forum, a series of academic research presentations set to discuss issues related to the management of the small enterprise.
