FAU to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

BOCA RATON , FL (September 14, 2007) – Florida Atlantic University will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from Monday, September 17 through Monday, October 15 on all of FAU’s campuses.  Hispanic Heritage Month serves as a time to remember the contributions of Hispanic Americans and learn about the cultures from which they come. 

Events taking place in the month of September include (arranged by date) –

·         Hispanic Heritage Month Opening Ceremony – Kick off Hispanic Heritage Month with a parade of Hispanic flags, food and entertainment.  This event will take place Monday, September 17 at 6 p.m. in the Student Union’s Grand Palm Room, Boca Raton campus . ·         Hispanic Heritage Exhibition – Learn about famous Latino people, flags of nations and literature. This event will take place Monday, September 17 through Monday, October 15 at FAU’s Treasure Coast campus. For more information, contact Teresa Brown at 772-873-3441.

·         Dancing 101 – Learn to dance to Latin rhythms, including the Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Cha Cha Cha and Bachata.   This event will take place Tuesday, September 25 and Wednesday, September 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Student Union’s Palmetto Palm Room, Boca Raton campus . ·         Fiesta LatinaShare the love, beauty, and sound of different rhythms and melodies that you learned at DANCING 101, and experience the intense and passionate nature of the Hispanic culture.   Refreshments will be served. This event will take place Thursday, September 27 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Student Union’s Grand Palm Room, Boca Raton campus . ·         “America Latina en Macondo: La narrativa de Gabriel Garcia Marquez” Luis Duno-Gottberg will speak about Latin American history in this lecture, conducted entirely in Spanish.   This event will take place Saturday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Broward County Public Library in Fort Lauderdale. October’s events and activities include:

·         “Selena” – Movie and Discussion – Watch the story of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, whose father forces his love and deep passion for music on his family, and see how they grew to love it and became famous. Popcorn and refreshments will be served. This event will take place Monday, October 1 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Senate Chambers at FAU’s Boca Raton campus . Event is sponsored by the Association of Latin American Students. ·         Domino ChallengeBring your best domino game to the table, and enjoy Hispanic food and music. This event will take place Tuesday, October 2 from noon to 2 p.m. in the Breezeway at the Davie campus . ·         “Latin American - US Integration” –   Dr. Rita Giacalone from the Universidad de los Andes will speak about Latin American history in this lecture, conducted entirely in Spanish. This event will take place Tuesday, October 2 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the FAU Senate Chambers, Boca Raton campus . Sponsored by the Caribbean and Latin American Studies Certificate Program. ·         Beach Party – Join the Office of Multicultural Affairs at the beach as they celebrate Hispanic culture. This event will take place Wednesday, October 3 from 2:30 p.m. until sunset at John U. Lloyd State Park, near FAU’s SeaTech campus . ·         H.O.P.E. (Hispanic Obesity Prevention and Education) Panel DiscussionLearn how obesity relates to heart disease, liver disease, diabetes and other illnesses. This event will take place Wednesday, October 10 from 11 a.m. to noon in the Board of Trustees Room, Room 305, Administration building, Boca Raton campus .  Lunch will be served. ·         Art & Literature Expo – This exhibition explores the cultural influence and technical innovation of Latin American art and literature. This event will take place Thursday, October 11 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Breezeway, Boca Raton campus . Event is sponsored by the Association of Latin American Students, the Black Student Union & Multicultural Programming and the Office of Multicultural Affairs. ·         Latin Festival – Enjoy crafts, paintings, music and food, all influenced by Hispanic culture. This event will take place Thursday, October 11 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., Treasure Coast campus . ·         “Revista Oral: Isabel Allende” (Theatrical Presentation) – A theatrical performance that integrates theater, music, painting and film in the spirit of culture to honor Isabel Allende, a Chilean novelist.   This event will take place Thursday, October 11 from 6 to 9 p.m., at Coyote Jack’s, Boca Raton campus . ·         Hispanic Heritage Month Closing Cermony This event will take place Monday, October 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Union’s Majestic Palm Room, Boca Raton campus .
