FAU Awarded $1.5 Million Grant to Provide Training for Educators Working with Limited English Proficient Children

BOCA RATON, FL (September 13, 2007) - Florida Atlantic University’s College of Education received a $1,457,607 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education to provide state-approved Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)   training for the next five years.   Florida requires all language arts teachers, school administrators and higher education faculty to have state-approved TESOL training.   This new project will provide tuition and other support for those groups to receive this required training.

According to the Urban Institute, nearly 70% of Limited English Proficient (LEP ) children in the U.S. are in California, Texas and Florida.   Although the overall population of school-aged children decreased by more than 10% during the past ten years, the population of school-aged LEP children increased by 100%.   Despite attempts by the State to assure that LEP children receive appropriate classroom services and accommodations, their low test scores and high dropout rates indicate that not enough is being done.

“We are absolutely thrilled to receive this sorely-needed funding,” said Dr. Hanizah Zainuddin, project director.   “Our goal is to use these funds to get as many teachers endorsed as possible, create a graduate-level TESOL certification and master’s degree program, and help school administrators and education faculty at the university gain access to high quality training.”

The comprehensive grant program will provide up to 100 stipends to school teachers and 10 stipends to school administrators in the six counties FAU serves to complete their ESOL endorsements and training at FAU. Additionally, the proposed master’s in teaching English to speakers of other languages program that is to be developed will give tuition stipends to 10 students.   Ten school administrators who register for the new coursework in policies and procedures for serving LEP students will also receive a stipend, as will FAU education faculty who complete the in-service training.
