FAU’s Pine Jog to Return to
Prescribed Fires Conducted by the Florida Division of
Forestry
BOCA RATON, FL (Friday, August 6, 2010) – Florida Atlantic University’s Pine Jog Environmental Education Center, located off Summit and Jog Road in Palm Beach County, will attempt to conduct a prescribed beginning Monday,August 9 through Saturday, August 14, weather permitting.
In contrast to an uncontrolled wildfire, prescribed fires are designed to mimic a naturally occurring phenomenon and are intentionally started under favorable climatic, environmental conditions after careful planning and site preparation. Change is biologically necessary to maintain healthy ecosystems and forestry managers have learned how to use fire to create changes in plant and animal communities to meet forest management objectives. Many Florida ecosystems evolved with fire and require periodic burning to regenerate and maintain a health environment.
Over the past few years, Pine Jog has worked closely with the Florida Division of Forestry, which has donated time and resources to prepare the property for the prescribed burns. Now that the preparation is complete, the Forestry Division’s trained staff will continue to work with Pine Jog to ensure a successful and safe burn.
Pine Jog is an environmental education center that develops and provides model environmental education programs to foster an awareness and appreciation of the natural world. One of the oldest nature centers in the nation, Pine Jog serves more than 25,000 students, 12,500 adults and families and 750 teachers annually from Palm Beach County.
