FAU Hosts Third Annual Freshman Convocation
BOCA RATON, FL (August 21, 2009) – More than 2,400 freshmen students have been invited to the 3 rd annual Florida Atlantic University Freshman Convocation on Sunday, August 23. The ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium, 777 Glades Road. The formality of the Freshman Convocation serves to underscore the important transition that is taking place in their lives and to extend the support of the university community to its newest members.
The keynote speaker at the convocation will be FAU’s Distinguished Teacher of the Year, Eric Chiang. Chiang is currently an associate professor of economics and the graduate director of the department. This past year, Chiang was named the TIAA-CREF University Faculty Service award winner. Chiang also volunteers much of his time to FAU, as the faculty advisor to the Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor Society, the FAU Surf Club and the FAU SkimBoard Club. He served as the FAU team captain at the AIDS Walk, and he's an active member of the University Faculty Senate.
“This is our third year running the convocation and in both previous years we have had an excellent response from the freshmen and faculty,” said Edward Pratt, undergraduate dean and coordinator of the event. “We expect the same this year, with the University’s Distinguished Teacher of the Year Eric Chiang giving the keynote address. This gives the students and faculty an opportunity to meet each other before the year begins.”
