FAU Vice President Gerri McPherson Receives 'Florida Senate Medallion of Excellence'

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (June 12, 2009)-
Gerri McPherson, vice president of Florida Atlantic University’s northern campuses, was recently honored with Senator Ken Pruitt’s “Florida Senate Medallion of Excellence” award for her 36 years of service in Florida’s public education system. McPherson will retire on June 30, 2009.

“For years we have relied on Gerri McPherson’s tremendous ‘can-do’ spirit and genuine talent as a highly effective leader at all levels of education,” said Pruitt. “Her tireless dedication has left a lasting mark on the Treasure Coast region and the State of Florida. The medallion is a way to honor her outstanding accomplishments and to recognize the conclusion of her amazing career.”

McPherson took on her role as an FAU campus vice president in 2004 after serving for three years as a university Board of Trustees charter member. She currently oversees FAU’s Treasure Coast campus in Port St. Lucie and the John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter.  McPherson is credited for significantly strengthening the partner campus operations and local outreach, making FAU’s northern presence an integral part of the university and the community.  McPherson’s leadership with the Treasure Coast campus’s 30,000-square-foot classroom facility expansion and her involvement in the Palm Pointe Educational Research School in Tradition made tremendous impacts to the area’s education and research initiatives. During her tenure, she also played a pivotal role regarding FAU’s growth and involvement with the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, which included the Marine Science Laboratory Building completion in 2004 and the merging of FAU and Harbor Branch in 2007.

Prior to her work at FAU, McPherson dedicated 27 years as an educator and an administrator with St. Lucie County Public Schools. During that time, she was recognized as an outstanding principal in Florida for both elementary and secondary schools. McPherson was the principal at Lincoln Park Academy in Fort Pierce when it was ranked 21 st in the nation by Newsweek and The Washington Post
