FAU Announces New Green Living Learning Community
BOCA RATON, FL (June 1, 2009) – Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Learning and Student Success will jumpstart its newest Living Learning Community (LLC) this fall. The FAU Globally Reshaping the Environment (GReEn) LLC will help students as they embrace going green in today’s world.
Similar to other FAU LLCs, this latest group also is geared toward helping students gain a unique and engaging opportunity to live amongst their classmates who have similar academic goals and interests. Students in each community will attend most of the same classes and will live on the same floor in student housing.
Through the FAU GReEn LLC, students will learn what it means to be environmentally conscious, economically ethical and create bonds with their fellow students. Additionally, students will see that the more involved they are with becoming green, the better chance they have at overcoming current environmental challenges together.
“The Center for Learning and Student Success created the new GReEn LLC because sustainability has become a more salient issue with this generation,” said Laura Pipe, assistant director of student retention at FAU. “Students need to be able to come up with concrete solutions concerning sustainability. The GReEn LLC is geared toward the environmental side of sustainability.”
Students in this LLC will take classes such as English Composition I, Learning Strategies & Human Development, The Blue Planet, as well as one Humanities “core curriculum” course and other appropriate courses specific to their majors. By doing this, students can talk to each other about the coursework and make connections with what they are learning and how to incorporate it in to their world. Professors who teach these classes within the LLC work closely with students and fellow faculty to provide better partnerships between students and faculty.
Other LLCs offered are Nursing, Business, PreHealth Professionals, General Science, as well as Engineering & Computer Science for students who have declared a major. PEACE, Global Connections, as well as Explore, are offered for students in any major or to those who are still undecided in their majors.
