FAU Presents a Summer Opera Repertory
BOCA RATON (June 2, 2008) -- The department of music in the School of the Arts in Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will present an opera repertory entitled “An Old Song Resung” on Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Society Hall on the Jupiter campus, 5353 Parkside Drive. Admission is free, though a donation is requested.
FAU choral groups, under the direction of Patricia Fleitas, will journey back to some of opera’s greatest moments, including scenes and an entire one act singspiel from two of opera’s greatest masters, Wolfgang Mozart and Georges Bizet. Featured repertoire will include solos, duets and choruses from Mozart's “The Marriage of Figaro,” “The Magic Flute,” and the comedic one-act, “Der Schauspieldirektor” (also known as “Impresario”), and Bizet’s “Carmen.”
In the duet to be performed from “The Marriage of Figaro,” entitled “Crudel perche finora,” the count prepares for an audition with Signor Impresario. Impresario, however, pays no attention to the count as he is intent on the opportunity to contract two of Vienna’s greatest opera divas, Madame Herz and Madamoiselle Silberklang. The three stars duke it out for the leading role. In scenes from “The Magic Flute,” Papageno and Papagena discover each other in the flirtatious duet from the finale of act II, and Pamina contemplates suicide in the famous “Ach ich fühl’s” aria in the finale of act II. Selections from Bizet’s Carmen include the famous “Habanera” aria and the “Toreador” aria.
