FAU Awarded First Place for Safety Record by Florida Department of Financial Services
BOCA
RATON, FL (May 9, 2011) –
Florida
Atlantic University is the first-place recipient of the 2010 Annual
Safety Award in the large agency or university category, issued by
the Florida Department of Financial Services. FAU reduced its
claims cost by 29 percent in 2010, criteria for which the award was
based.
“Safety has been a concerted effort on the part of the whole
university community from the highest levels of the administration
to well-trained safety, risk management, legal and human resources
professionals,” said Tom Bradley, director of FAU’s
department of environmental health and safety. “We take
a service-oriented approach providing services and training when
and where people need them, and helping people do the right
thing. Receiving this award is significant because it
confirms and recognizes FAU’s commitment to the health and
safety of the university community.”
The University Safety Committee and a number of specific
departments are responsible for implementing comprehensive policies
and procedures to ensure a safe and healthy environment for
students, faculty, staff and visitors. These departments focus on
loss prevention efforts in a variety of areas such as hiring
practices, fire safety, occupational safety, hazardous material
handling, shipping and disposal, insurance coverage and contract
reviews, emergency preparedness, and emergency notification
systems. The university also conducts numerous workplace safety
inspections and safety trainings to help prevent accidents and
injuries from occurring. Accidents and injuries are investigated
and corrective actions are made when necessary.
