FAU Presents the Dances We Dance Performance Showcase

BOCA RATON (April 23, 2009) – Florida Atlantic University’s department of theatre and dance in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters presents the “Dances We Dance Performance Showcase,” on Friday, April 24 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 25 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. The performances will take place in the University Theatre on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road, and will feature students enrolled in spring dance courses and participating in the various dance clubs, along with a guest company, the Skylight Dance Project. The showcase will feature unique expressions of ballet, modern, jazz and tap, as well as an array of culturally diverse dance genres, including a Native American sash dance, flamenco, Argentine tango, Indian and hip hop dance. General admission is $5, and children under 14 may receive admission for $1.

Through a generous donation from the Association of Performing Arts of India, Rangapriya Nagaraj will share her expertise as a dancer and choreographer of bharatanatyam, the oldest of the classical dance forms of India. Nagaraj’s novice dancers use facial expressions, body movements, hand gestures and intricate footwork to depict a story.   Additionally, Pavitra Jaiswal will perform a dynamically radiant solo fusing traditional and contemporary dance vocabulary.

In another performance, Rome Saladino performs to an ever-familiar Vivaldi tune with  five dancers in brightly-hued costumes as the embodiment of excitement and emotional freedom of spring.   Then, with her newest score as accompaniment, Cynthia Zaitz has created a tongue-in-cheek theatre and dance piece about the problems caused by overpopulation. Finally, a tap number takes us back to the age of the dance halls of the 30s and 40s with swing.
