FAU Presents Dances We Dance Performance Showcase

BOCA RATON, FL (April 24, 2008) – The department of theatre and dance in the School of the Arts in Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters presents its 7 th Dances We Dance Performance Showcase in two performances on Tuesday, April 29 and Wednesday, April 30 at 8 p.m.   The performances, which will take place in the University Theatre on the Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road, are the culmination of performance study for students in all levels of dance at FAU.   They will feature original choreography and the Florida premieres of works by faculty, guest artists and student choreographers. Admission is $5 at the door with general seating.

The Ballet III students will perform former American Ballet Theatre Eileen Hebron’s original interpretation of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.”   It has a distinctly and appropriately jazzy attitude.   The Modern Dance II students will perform “A Change Entered My Mind , which was created by Assistant Professor Clarence Brooks .    It is a dance in three sections to a medley of songs by Sam Cooke, Nancy Wilson and Thelonious Monk.   The solo, entitled “Change ,” showcases Denver Milord, an FAU dance student who was recently accepted into Carnegie Mellon’s musical theatre dance program.   Another section, “Christina’s World,” is a performance by three dancers about yearning and loss.   It was inspired by both Andrew Wyeth’s 20 th century masterpiece of the same name as well as a stone mausoleum in Pere-Lachaise, the French National Cemetery in Paris.

Diana Mighdoll , one of several guest choreographers and performers in the showcase, is a founding member of South Florida’s bi-coastal, semi-professional modern dance company, MusInc.   The Palm Beach company contingent, comprised of several FAU dancers, will premier Mighdoll’s “Ballade” accompanied by the familiar strains of two Chopin nocturnes and a piano prelude.   This performance will also be given this summer at the Lake Worth Playhouse.

Three of the four FAU dance clubs will also be represented in the concert.   Members of the award-winning USA Club Ballroom will perform three original works, including a tango and a cha cha choreographed by renowned ballroom instructor Tommy Engler.   The Flamenco Club, under the capable direction of international dancer Mercia Graham, will dance a vibrantly colorful “Gypsy Circle .   The Orient Club, which performs classical Egyptian belly dancing, will perform “The Forbidden One,” which includes the manipulation of veils and the percussive sounds of zills.
