FAU Participates in MLK Day of Service
BOCA RATON, FL (February 7, 2011) – More
than 80 students and staff volunteers from Florida Atlantic
University participated recently in FAU’s MLK Day of Service
at the L.A. Lee Family YMCA in Fort Lauderdale.
The FAU volunteers cleared land in the YMCA’s playground area
to plant a butterfly garden, built four raised community garden
beds with cedar planks and removed overgrown vines from a perimeter
fence. Artists Denise Anderson, FAU alumnus; Hilary Nicole
Leblanc, FAU graduate student; and FAU student Soledad Del Real
also painted three themed murals on the inside walls of the YMCA,
titled “Youth Development,” “Healthy
Living” and “Social Responsibility.”
“The children at the YMCA now have three new colorful,
positive-message wall murals that support the focus areas of the
YMCA,” said Nori Carter, director of the Weppner Center for
Civic Engagement and Service at FAU. “FAU students and
staff also planted gardens to inspire them to lead healthy,
holistic lifestyles. The impact FAU students and staff were able to
have will leave a lasting impression on not only the participants,
but also the children who will be benefiting from the services
provided.”
Sponsors of the event included FAU’s Office of Multicultural
Affairs, the Weppner Center for Civic Engagement & Service,
Multicultural Programming, Students Advocating Volunteer
Involvement (SAVI) and Helping Out Our Town (HOOT).
“I personally feel that it is something great when a
community can come together to make a difference,” said Sam
Monroe, executive director of the L.A. Lee Family YMCA. “It
was Dr. King’s dream that we come together as one, striving
to make a difference in the lives of the communities that we
serve.”
