FAU’s Peace Studies Program
Sponsors Events Leading up to Visit by His Holiness the
14th Dalai Lama of Tibet
Events Include Lectures, Films
and Symposia
BOCA RATON, FL (February 4, 2010) – The Peace Studies Program within Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters invites the public to attend Expressions of Peace Week events at its Boca Raton, Davie and Jupiter campuses from Wednesday, February 17 through Tuesday, February 23, preceding a visit by His Holiness the 14 th Dalai Lama of Tibet. The week of events has been organized to encourage students and the public to become involved in discussions and contemplation on the complex dimensions of peace.
The public lecture with the Dalai Lama will take place at FAU’s Boca Raton campus on Wednesday, February 24 at 10 a.m. A full schedule can be found at www.fau.edu/peaceweek.

Concert and Lecture:
Forgiveness, Compassion and Justice: Masterworks of
Western Music
Wednesday, February 17, from 1 to 2 p.m.
Arts and
Letters building, room 247
Heather Coltman,
chair of FAU’s department of music, will examine how great
composers engage with moral issues, humans harming humans,
compassion, and finding hope and peace.

Discussion Panel: Peace in Sacred Texts and Histories of
Peace
Wednesday, February 17, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Fleming Hall, room 247
FAU faculty Fred Greenspahn, Kris Lindbeck and Eric Hanne,
as well as Lynn University assistant professor Dan Bass, will
explore scholarship on sacred texts and the impact of such works
in current times.

Film and Discussion: Sand Painting: The Sacred Art of
Tibet
Wednesday, February, 17, from 5 to 6 p.m.
Social Science Building, room 190
FAU’s Anthropology Chair Michael Harris will lead
this discussion about the ancient art of Tibetan sand painting,
which has been preserved in the monasteries of India and Tibet
for some 2,500 years.

Peace Studies Teach-In Workshop: Peace and World
Conflicts
Thursday, February 18, at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
FAU Student Union
Peace Studies teach-in workshop sessions will engage
students and faculty in open discussion on issues pertinent to
peace and world conflicts. The last session will include the
screening of a documentary on
Afghanistan.

Discussion Forum: Dynamics of Peace
Thursday, February 18, from noon to 2 p.m.
Palmetto Palm Room, Student Union
FAU faculty from the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science
and the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will
examine how psychologists and scientists are using metaphors from
mathematics to solve conflicts in current times.

Workshop: Hospitality and Compassion: Cornerstones of
Co-Existence
Thursday, February 18, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Wimberly Library, fifth floor
Dr. Rosanna Gatens, director of FAU’s Center for
Holocaust and Human Rights, will lead a workshop on compassion
and hospitality, and the application of such principles in daily
life.

Art and Buddhism lecture
Thursday, February 18, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Palmetto Palm Room, Student Union
Carol Damian, director and chief curator of the Frost Art
Museum at Florida International University, will host a lecture
on Buddhist art and Tibet.

Screening: “Pray the Devil Back to Hell”
Thursday, February 18, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Queen Palm Room, Student Union
“Pray the Devil Back to Hell” is a celebrated
documentary that tells the story of the women’s peace
movement in Liberia. The screening will be followed by an open
forum led by Josephine Beoku-Betts, FAU professor and member of
the FAU Peace Studies executive committee.

Discussion Forum: Theory and Practice in
Restorative Justice and Peacemaking
Thursday, February 18, 7 p.m
Social Sciences building, room 170
Mara Schiff and Gordon Bazemore, criminal justice faculty
at FAU, will lead this forum that will look at the theory that
communities are considered essential participants in the justice
process. The theory states that government and the community
share the responsibility to prevent and respond to crime, and to
look for ways to achieve peace.

meditation and practical ways to create a peaceful life.

Peaceway on the Breezeway
Monday, February 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Peaceway on the Breezeway will be an open exhibition of FAU
student organizations and other community members interested in
peace. Groups represented will include FAU’s Peace Studies
Student Association and Mission Green Student Association, as
well as local humanitarian-related organizations.

Lecture: Global Challenges for a Compassionate World
Monday, February 22, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Schmidt Center Gallery, Performing Arts Building
Global Challenges for a Compassionate World is a panel
discussion that will focus on historical and cultural
perspectives about the importance of compassion in global times,
along with intercultural and international challenges to the
peace building processes. The panel will be moderated by Becky
Mulvaney, associate professor in FAU’s School of
Communication and Multimedia Studies. Participants include Scott
C. Martin, professor in American culture studies and history in
the department of history at Bowling Green State
University; David C. Williams, associate professor in
FAU’s School of Communication and Multimedia Studies; Lara
Lengel, professor and chair of the department of communication in
the School of Media and Communication at Bowling Green State
University.

Victor Maier, professor of Chinese language and literature
at the University of Pennsylvania, explores key issues
surrounding Tibetan Buddhism and China.

Public Forum: Nobel Prize Voices on World Peace
Tuesday,
February 23, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Dr. Cezar Ornatowski, professor at San Diego State
University; Erik Doxtader, senior research fellow at the
Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, Cape Town; Jane
Robinett, director of the graduate program in rhetoric and
writing studies at San Diego State University, who is currently
doing research on the public rhetoric of His Holiness the 14
th Dalai Lama of Tibet; and Noemi Marin, director and
professor of FAU’s Peace Studies Program, will present
scholarship dedicated to the Nobel Peace Prize laureates: His
Holiness the 14
th Dalai Lama of Tibet, U.S. President Barack Obama,
Lech Walesa, Elie Weisel and former President of South Africa
Nelson Mandela.

“Dalai Lama Renaissance” is a documentary about
the life and mission of the Dalai Lama, and has been praised as
provocative, enlightening and entertaining. The film, narrated by
Harrison Ford, will be followed by a special appearance by the
film’s producer-director, Khashyar Darvich, as well as an
open forum to explore the Dalai Lama’s public message of
peace in the world.

and entertaining. The film, narrated by Harrison Ford, will be
followed by an open forum moderated by Maria Santamarina, diversity
officer of FAU.

Symposium on Peace

The Symposium on Peace events will include a discussion
forum on Buddhist history, a storytelling performance/lecture by
Eth-Noh-tec on the importance of place in our lives, and a Kirtan
concert featuring the Devananda group and Buddhist music.

Storytelling Performance and Lecture: The Making of
Jerusalem Stories
Tuesday, February 23, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
SD 105, Heritage Hall
Carol Grossman, director of the Jerusalem Stories Project,
will use storytelling in her efforts toward peace building and
conflict resolution in the Middle East.

Discussion Forum: Lost and Found: Seeking Compassion in
Juvenile Justice
Tuesday, February 23, 4 p.m.
Liberal Arts Building, room 124
Mara Schiff and Gordon Bazemore, criminal justice faculty
at FAU, will lead this forum that will consider how the juvenile
justice system can be improved by looking at ways of helping
juveniles, rather than extending their punishment.

Film Screening and Discussion: “Tibet: Violent and
Non-Violent Resistance”
Thursday, February 18, from 5 to 7 p.m.
AD 119, Campus Auditorium
“Tibet: Violent and Non-Violent Resistance” is
a documentary that presents the story of the Tibetan
people’s 50-year non-violent resistance to an unwanted
occupation by the People’s Liberation Army of China. The
occupation has seen the death of 1.2 million Tibetans and the
destruction of more than 6,000 monasteries. An open forum
will follow the screening.
