revealing letters and diaries they wrote while separated during
the American Revolutionary era. They will dress in period
costumes and assume the demeanor and dialect of the Adams during
the theatrical presentation.
The performance is being sponsored in conjunction with FAU Libraries’ current exhibition, “John Adams Unbound,” which explores the personal library of John Adams, one of the nation’s founding fathers. The exhibition was organized by the Boston Public Library and the American Library Association Public Programs Office. Kristen’s Block lecture will highlight America’s
earliest efforts to make sense of the violence and upheaval that
resulted from the war for independence from Britain. Early
commemorative rituals planned for the Fourth of July looked to the
war to create a sense of national purpose by celebrating shared
sacrifices. The commemorations also created a festive atmosphere to
promote political values of Republican virtue among the populace.
Some of the population, most notably freed blacks, were disgruntled
with many of the celebrations.
The lecture is
being sponsored in conjunction with FAU Libraries’ current
exhibition “John Adams Unbound,” which explores the
personal library of John Adams, one of the nation’s founding
fathers. The exhibition was organized by the Boston Public Library
and the American Library Association Public Programs Office. This
traveling exhibition has been made possible by a major grant from

a unique contribution to South Florida’s visual arts scene in
that it complements and expands upon the region’s
Miami-centered contemporary art offerings. There will be an opening
reception for the exhibition on Friday, February 4 at 6:30
p.m.
Few of the artists in the exhibition have shown in South Florida, yet many of them have shown throughout the United States and internationally. In association with the exhibition three artists, Hunt Clark from Tennessee, Stephanie Patton from Louisiana and Scott Ingram from Georgia will travel to FAU to install their three-dimensional works and interact with FAU visual arts students.
