FAU Jupiter to Host ‘Campus Camp Wellstone’ to Focus, Train on Progressive Activism
JUPITER, FL (January 14, 2008) – Florida Atlantic University will host Campus Camp Wellstone on the John D. MacArthur campus, 5353 Parkside Drive, Jupiter. The national, non-partisan two-day program will take place on Friday, January 18 from 5 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, January 19 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“FAU Jupiter is eager to host this event, as it comes just one week prior to the university’s Boca Raton campus hosting the presidential primary debates,” said Heather Bishara, assistant director of student life and recreation at FAU Jupiter. “During this important political time in our country, members of our community want their voices to be heard now more than ever, and Campus Camp Wellstone provides a proactive way for this to be accomplished.”
The training program, geared toward seasoned activists and those new to progressive activism, will focus on concrete skills such as campaign planning, coalition building and message development through training sessions conducted by Camp Wellstone professionals. Participants also will learn how to successfully recruit and retain volunteers, as well as develop new leadership.
Campus Camp Wellstone is part of Wellstone Action, a national center for training and leadership development for the progressive movement. Founded in January 2003, Wellstone Action’s mission is to honor the legacy of former U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone and his wife, Sheila, by continuing their work through training, educating, mobilizing and organizing a vast network of progressive individuals and organizations. The Wellstones died in a plane crash in 2002.
The event is free and open to all FAU students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public. All interested participants must register no later than Wednesday, January 16. Campus Camp Wellstone is co-sponsored by FAU’s Jupiter Feminist Student Union, Enviro Club, Council of Student Organizations, College Democrats, Student Life & Recreation and the FAU Leadership Committee.
