Enjoy Relaxation Treatment at Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center
Grant from Boca Raton Community Hospital Addresses Needs of Those Caring for Individuals with Memory Loss
BOCA RATON , FL (January 11, 2008) – Florida Atlantic University’s Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center hosted SPA Day, a result of a grant from the Boca Raton Community Hospital. SPA Day recently provided 30 men and women who take care of loved ones with memory loss the opportunity to enjoy a day of relaxation treatment at the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center.
Called the SPA Day, which is short for Self Preservation Activities, participants received an overview of the importance of caring for the caregiver before participating in a variety of relaxation techniques. Experts were on hand to give hands-on instruction for yoga, massage and Reiki. They also watched videos on the benefits of acupressure, sleep, and deep breathing.
“Caregivers often risk emotional, physical, and financial burdens. It is hard enough to watch a spouse slowly lose memory. On top of this, the caregivers may be dealing with driving issues or taking over the responsibilities of household management that had been shared with their spouses before the illness ,” said Denise Sparks, PhD, who is the interim administrator for the Memory and Wellness Center. “Relaxation techniques and support tactics that are specifically designed for the caregiver ultimately benefit everyone involved.”
The Memory and Wellness Center of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing , located on Florida Atlantic University’s Boca Raton campus, offers year-round Sustaining the Caregiver activities, which are a complimentary series of programs and services tailored to the needs of those caring for individuals with memory loss. Made possible through a grant from Boca Raton Community Hospital , the Center offers counseling, care consultations, support groups, educational presentations, relaxation and yoga classes, a caregiver research library, and internet access for research.
