Establishing a scholarship to honor their daughter’s memory was an important part of the healing process for FAU alumna and employee Allison Simpson ’99 and her husband Tom Simpson. The grief that Allison and Tom share will never disappear, but the couple takes solace in knowing that through the Megan C. Simpson Nursing Scholarship Award in FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, they are paying tribute to a profession that symbolizes compassion and healing.
When they think of Megan, their beautiful infant daughter who fought so hard to stay alive despite being born with a small hole in her heart, they are reminded of the wonderful and dedicated nurses who provided them with comfort and caring during what turned into a month-long hospitalization. “Our experience in the hospital has changed us forever. The nurses Tom and I came to know made a profound impact on our lives,” says Allison. “They checked on us, talked to us when our families couldn’t be there and were always in tune with what we needed. Without them we would not have had so many precious moments with our daughter.”
For more than two years, Allison has played an integral role in awarding scholarships to students through her position with the FAU Foundation, Inc. office. By creating the Megan C. Simpson Nursing Scholarship, Allison and Tom are helping students who demonstrate financial need, while at the same time they are providing educational opportunities to generations of future nurses. Allison believes, “There is no better way to help a student then by giving him or her the opportunity to make a difference in the world.”
FAU faculty and staff can help support Allison and Tom’s dream and make a difference as well by giving a tax deductible gift to the Megan C. Simpson Nursing Scholarship Award.
