No Matter How You Slice It...
In June, the departments of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering held a Rube Goldberg-type engineering design challenge to slice an apple. Rube Goldberg was an engineering graduate of UC Berkeley who became known for his ability to invent difficult and complex ways to perform simple tasks. FAU and local high school students worked in teams and were graded on completion of the task, clear use of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering principles, and design innovation.
Journalists Attend Institute at FAU Jupiter
Journalists attending the 2007 Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment paused for this photo inside Everglades National Park. The group, accompanied by two park rangers and the deputy director of science for the South Florida Natural Resources Center, had just hiked through a portion of the park’s Long Pine Key area, the final field trip in a busy, five-day program of environmental studies. Twenty-four professional print, broadcast and web journalists traveled to the John D. MacArthur Campus to participate in the May 29-June 2 institute, a continuing education effort funded by the Scripps Howard Foundation. The yearly May institute is a joint effort of the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies and the Center for Environmental Studies.

Scouting for Engineers
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Southeast Florida Section, which includes the SWE FAU student chapter, recently hosted a Girl Scouts workshop on "Learning the
Wonders of Engineering: The Girl Scouts Way!". The event offered 30 eight- and nine-year-old girls and their parents a short presentation and introduction to engineering principles through seven different activities. Awards were given for the best projects. Each girl also received a t-shirt, an events patch, a tote bag with goodies and a certificate.
