FAU Breaks Ground for
Davie Campus Student Union

FAU’s Broward campuses celebrated the beginning of a new era with the groundbreaking of the Davie Campus Student Union on Nov. 28. At the ceremony, President Brogan joined Broward Student Government leaders to celebrate a significant milestone in the University’s rapid evolution in Davie and western Broward County.

“The teaching, the learning, the university life experiences that are unfolding on all of our campuses continue to see us emerge and expand as a university that I’m fond of saying still has its best days to come — even as great as the first 42 years have been,” said President Brogan.

Also participating in the groundbreaking ceremony were FAU and Broward campus leaders, including Dr. Joyanne Stephens, vice president for Broward campuses, Dr. Charles Brown, vice president for student affairs, Gian Amato, student governor of Broward campuses and Terry Mena, associate director of student development and activities for Broward campuses.

The $6 million, 20,000-square-foot Student Union was designed by Schwab, Twitty and Hanser Architectural Group of West Palm Beach. James B. Pirtle Construction Co, Inc. of Davie will oversee construction of the building, which will be located northwest of the Liberal Arts Building. Planning, design and construction of the Student Union has been made possible through significant financial contributions from Broward Student Government’s Capital Improvement Trust Fund (with temporary allocations also from the FAU Treasure Coast Campus Student Government), FAU Student Affairs/Broward Campuses (FAU Health Services), FAU Business Services and the FAU Broward Bookstore.

Once complete, the Student Union will house offices for Student Government and campus organizations, a student lounge with computer room, a large multipurpose room for events, health and counseling service facilities, a food service facility and an expanded University bookstore in partnership with Barnes & Noble College Bookstores.

“The Student Union building will be the heart of this campus,” said FAU Broward Campuses Governor Gian Amato. “It will serve as the center for student activism on the Davie campus. At the new Student Union, we will build involvement, we will build engagement and we will build leadership.”

The new facility will serve the University as it reaches farther into the South Florida community. Broward County’s population is expected to grow to 2.3 million by 2030 and is predicted to include 1.3 million working adults and more than 400,000 school-aged children. Much of Broward’s population — and geographical growth — will continue to take place in the county’s western and northwestern areas.

The FAU Davie campus master plan is poised to serve this diverse population. In the next 10 years, the Davie campus will become a center for growing research partnerships as it nearly doubles in size. More than 5,000 students are currently pursuing degrees on the Davie campus; that number is expected to double in the next decade.

“It’s not the building that attracts the students. It’s the activities and programs that go on in the building,” said FAU Vice President for Student Affairs Charles Brown. “Building this kind of facility on all of our campuses will help us to attract retain and graduate quality citizens who will be very proud of FAU.”

Regardless of rapid growth, the Davie campus community has always been close-knit, said FAU Vice President for Broward Campuses Joyanne Stephens. “We’ve never thought of ourselves as faculty, students, and staff. We’re in it together,” Stephens said. “Can you imagine what the future holds for us? I can’t wait to see the accomplishments of this group of people propelled by this wonderful new facility.”

Broward United Way Kick-Off

United Way Fort Lauderdale campus kick-off 12/5/06. Ken Basilio, United Way representative, Phyllis Bebko, Sherre Clegg-Jolly, Melissa Holt, Beth Greenwald and Fran Viera.

On Dec. 5, the Fort Lauderdale and Davie campuses rallied to raise money for the United Way of Broward County. The event was themed "The Season of Giving" and included gift box decorations, hot chocolate, gingerbread cookies and other holiday favorites. Local companies encouraged FAU employees to give to the United Way by providing raffle prizes, and many people who came to the event to learn about giving to their community actually walked away with prizes of their own, including a $100 Laughing Matterz gift certificate, a $50 Shooter's certificate and much more. In addition, the names of all those who donated to the United Way of Broward County were entered into a grand prize drawing to win a one-year family membership to the Fort Lauderdale Art Museum. Iris Coyle from the Fort Lauderdale campus and Shireen Lalla from the Davie campus were the Grand Prize winners.

The two-week campaign resulted in $8,300 in pledges from Broward faculty and staff. In addition, students on the Davie campus hosted a Smoothie King fundraiser and brought in more than $100. The total donation to the United Way of Broward County was just over $8,400! Thank you to everyone who participated to make this special event a success.

Team Sleepwalkers Raises Money for American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life
