From outside his second floor office in the bustling Student Support Services Building, Dr. Emanuel “Manny” Newsome (at right) had a bird’s eye view of what could be the busiest indoor thoroughfare on the Boca Raton campus. As vice president for student affairs for the past 18 years, Newsome formed a deep connection to FAU’s diverse and steadily growing student population. Although he has recently relocated to the College of Education, Newsome will continue to work for students – this time in the role of “distinguished service professor.” After completing a sabbatical leave that will include travel to Thailand for an Office for Overseas Schools conference, Newsome will return to the classroom. His 41 years of experience in higher education will provide him with a wealth of material for planning such courses as Leadership and Administration. Although he has shifted his focus, Newsome remains committed to FAU’s mission of educating young minds.
“Because the students need our help I have always given to FAU’s annual fund. As FAU has matured and branched out in new directions, the need for financial support has increased,” says Newsome, a President’s Club member who gives through payroll deductions. When the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College opened its doors, Newsome believed in the program and was there to help. When FAU Football was launched, Newsome, a true sports fan, helped make the dream of Football in Paradise a reality. In addition, he has earmarked monies to establish scholarships for minority students.
“Staff should take the time to look at the various needs of the University,” says Newsome. “If we expect people outside the University to help, then we as staff must lead by example and give. I will continue to support FAU and hope that my gifts will make a difference. When you give to a university — be it to academic programs, athletics or scholarships — how can you go wrong?”
