Realism and Naturalism (France, US, UK)
Literature and Philosophy
Modern French history in Literature
Rod Cooke specializes in modern French literature and culture. A national of France and the UK, his research draws on interdisciplinary perspectives in history, philosophy and politics. His publications in American and European journals discuss authors such as Zola, Flaubert, Céline, Baudelaire, Maupassant and Perec.
His current book manuscript takes a new approach to writers' engagement in the Dreyfus Affair, arguing that their earlier aesthetic ideas were an important source for their political discourse during the crisis. Other ongoing research deals with Stendhal and Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s uses of history as a narrative object, George Sand and George Eliot's appeals to visual art, and Maupassant's cultural geography.
