Rear Admiral Joseph Greenspan was a Jewish Coast Guard
veteran of World War I and World War II

The Coast Guard was established in 1798 and it was the only American armed force afloat. It has been protecting our shores since that time.

Greenspan enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1916 and became a career man. Through the years he was promoted through the ranks until he became a Rear Admiral.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, on December7, 1941, he was in command of the Coast Guard destroyer Ingan. He then became an escort commander with the convoys in the Atlantic Ocean.

He was awarded the Commendation Ribbon by the Commander-in-chief of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet for his services and bravery as an escort commander.

Greenspan then served as Assistant District Coast Guard officer of the 11th U. S. Naval District and Supply officer at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Rear Admiral Greenspan served with distinction and honor in the United States Coast Guard.
