Celia Adler: A Star on theYiddish Stage

Celia Adler was the outstanding leading lady in the Yiddish art theater during the 20s, 30s and 40s. She appeared on the Jewish theater stage in the United States, Europe and South America.

She also starred as a holocaust survivor in Luther Adler’s 1946 Broadway production of a “A Flag Is Born,” which was written by Ben Hecht.

Celia Adler performed on stage in the plays of Shakespeare and Tolstoy. She appeared in films and television.

Her films were “Where Is My Child” (1937) and “The Naked City” (1948). Her television appearances were “The Naked City,” (1958-1963); Broadway Television Theater–“The Jazz Singer” an episode, 1952, and “Show Me the Way to Go Home,” an episode (1961).

Celia Adler was the daughter of Dinah and Jacob Adler. She was the older half-sister of Stella and Luther Adler, who were well known for their work in the Yiddish Art Theater and teachers of the craft of acting.

She was born in 1891 and died on January 31, 1979. She is buried in the Yiddish Theater Section of Mount Hebron Cemetery, in Flushing, New York, U.S.A.
