Alyssa R. Gonzalez-DeHass, Ph.D., professor of educational psychology in the College of Education at Florida Atlantic University’s Jupiter campus recently published Parent Involvement for Motivated Learners: Encouraging Self-Directed and Resilient Students.

Parent Involvement for Motivated Learners provides pre-service teachers and researchers with guidance on how to foster mindful, healthy school-family partnerships that empower students to become resilient, self-directed learners. Given the intense academic pressures on students to succeed-and on parents and teachers to help them do so-it is important to develop learners who can weather increased standards and demands. Committed to helping teachers reflect on how parent involvement relates to motivational concepts such as the growth mindset, self-regulated learning, and intrinsic motivation to learn, this book is an accessible synthesis of relevant research and theory surrounding student motivation and parent involvement.

Dr. Gonzalez-DeHass received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Florida in 1998. For nearly 20 years, Dr. Gonzalez-DeHass has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in educational psychology. Her research interests lie in the areas of students’ achievement goals, parent involvement, school-community partnerships, and the case study method of teaching educational psychology. The Journal Educational Psychology Review published her influential article co-authored with Patricia Willems and Marie Doan Holbein reviewing the relationship between parent involvement and student motivation in 2005. In 2016, Childhood Education published her article discussing parent involvement strategies for encouraging students’ self-regulated learning. She also serves on the editorial review board for the School Community Journal.

She is married and has two children, and always tries to make time to be involved in her own children’s schools. She has served on various school advisory councils and PTAs and pitched in to help as a classroom volunteer. Dr. Gonzalez-Dehass believes active communities of schools and families working together can have lasting benefits for students’ learning and motivation.
