He has also written and edited twelve books, including An Introduction to Aramaic (1999, corrected 2nd edition, 2007) and When Brothers Dwell Together, The Preeminence of Younger Siblings in the Hebrew Bible (1994), as well as several books on interfaith relations. He is currently editor of the NYU Press series Jewish Studies in the Twenty-First Century.
From 2005-2007 he was President of the National Association of Professors of Hebrew and, for 5 years, editor of its journal Hebrew Studies (1991-94). He was also an advisor for the Jewish Publication Society’s Guide to the Jewish Bible (2009) and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Reform Judaism (1971-90) and the Journal of Biblical Literature (1988-94) as well as the boards of the Association for Jewish Studies (1981-86, 2003-2005), the Society of Biblical Literature (1986-90), and the academic advisory board of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (1997-2005).
