FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions)
Do I have
to attend orientation?
Yes. The
international student Immigration Orientation is mandatory
and all international students on F-1/J-1 visa status are
required to attend. At orientation, students will be given
information regarding federal regulations, immigration
status, and the responsibilities of being an international
student at FAU.
Do I need
to have medical insurance?
Yes. All
international students and scholars must have medical
insurance that meets the requirements of the university and
the State of Florida.
F-1 students
can comply
with this requirement in two ways: (1) Purchase the policy
available through Florida Atlantic University or (2) provide
proof of acceptable alternate medical insurance plan.
International students who wish to purchase (or currently
hold) an alternate policy must provide proof that the
alternate policy provides the mandated benefits.
The Alternate
Insurance Compliance Form is designed to assist international
students in complying with the medical insurance requirement
as established by the Florida Administrative Code Rule
6C-6.009(6) and FAU Rule 4.009.
J-1 students
must
purchase the FAU-sponsored plan and cannot use an alternate
plan for complying with the insurance requirement. J-1
Students/Scholars and their J-2 dependents are required by
federal law to maintain health insurance coverage during the
entire duration of their association with FAU (including any
period authorized for academic training).
Can I drop
below full-time?
No. Your
immigration status requires full-time enrollment during the
fall and spring terms (12 credit hours for undergraduate
students and 9 graduate level credit hours for graduate
students). Students who are considering dropping below
full-time hours must meet with an ISSS advisor immediately
before dropping or withdrawing from classes. Students who
drop or withdraw from classes without ISSS approval will
jeopardize their immigration status.
Can I work
on-campus?
You can
work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the fall and
spring terms with authorization from an ISSS advisor. During
the summer vacation, spring break, and holiday season you may
engage in full-time employment on-campus.
I need a
Social Security number. What should I do?
You can obtain a social
security number once you have obtained employment and
authorization from an ISSS advisor. You must apply for a
social security number through your local social security
office.
What
should I do if I change my address?
You will
need to notify the Registrar's office and the ISSS. Within 10
days of the address change you should also complete an AR-11
form available at the ISSS or online at
http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/ar-11.pdf
and mail it to the address listed on the form. Failure
to notify the USCIS could result in serious
consequences.
