Videoconferencing: Visuals
- Visual materials can be very helpful in a videoconference class. They can be video, still images, text-based presentations, etc.
- Because they will be viewed via videoconference, you need to take care in how they are created, especially in terms of font size and type, color composition, and contrast (See “Useful Tips” section)
- Pre-recorded video (VHS or DVD format) can be used as part of class presentations. However, it is important to realize that broadcast quality is much more demanding than home videos, so most videos made for home use are not usable for broadcast in your classes. Check with ULR for notification and clearance.
- It is important to be sure that you have permission from the copyright owner to broadcast a videotape. You are publicly distributing video when you broadcast it as part of a class, so it is not the same as private use in a conventional classroom. You must have permission.
University Creative Services ( 561-297-3025) can also help you with creating graphics for your course.
Useful Tips
-
Use a pencil point or a pointer when referring to specific areas on the graphic.
-
Visuals should be kept simple; too much detail or very "busy" drawings can be confusing
-
Text/illustrations should be quite large – it is best that they fill screen
-
Lettering should be a medium or bold type and use mixed case (never all upper case as it is difficult to read)
-
Type size depends on the font, but generally a 24 pt. Times New Roman (1/4" high letters minimum) or larger will work with copy camera zoomed in all the way.
-
Do not use a typewriter to make graphics because it generally cannot produce a font large enough
-
Photos and laminated materials – Use matte finish rather than glossy.
-
Use high contrast color combinations (white text on dark background or dark text on light background).
-
Plan your visual to be “landscape” (horizontal) rather than vertical.
-
Provide at least 1-in border around images/text so that the image doesn’t “run off the page”
-
Convert 35mm slides to digital media
-
When displaying media do not scroll often.
