As part of IRM's general switch replacement plan, two new switches were upgraded this past weekend at the Liberal Arts building in the Davie campus.
This project was a team effort made possible thanks to the financial resources provided by IRM and Broward Physical Plant departments, as well as to the people who worked on the actual replacement.
Apollo Ramon, IRM-BCS Network Systems Administrator, coordinated the upgrade, which also counted with the support of other IRM-BCS staff members (Ivan Aristizabal, Pete Shimpeno, Keith Adderley, and Melvin Joseph), and IRM-Network staff members (Ken Rathhaar and Joe Guest) from the Boca Raton campus. They worked for more than 20 hours (Saturday from 4:30 p.m. – 2 a.m.; Sunday 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.) to complete the project. Overall, they reconnected more than 700 ports.

How this upgrade affects me as a user?
The two new switches allow for a potential 10-times faster network speed for the faculty and staff who are located in the third and fourth floor of the Liberal Arts building, as well as faster connections in all the instructional computer classrooms. Furthermore, the new switch will also be more stable, thus eliminating the network disconnections that people in those areas were experiencing.
