English as a Second Language (ESL)

Evening Program: Beginning to Intermediate Level English

Course Description:

If you want to improve your English skills but have a work schedule that does not allow you to study full time, this program is the solution for you. Attend classes three evenings each week and study grammar, writing, vocabulary building and reading comprehension. This is a multi-level program in which you will improve your listening and speaking skills through extensive conversation practice.

 On the first day of class, you will take a placement test to determine your English level.

Prerequisite: None

Cost

$650 (including parking)

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Saturday Program: Intermediate to Advanced Level English

Course Description:

Take this program if you are a non-native speaker of English and wish to acquire a good command of English to improve your professional as well as your personal life.

The program includes grammar, reading and writing comprehension, vocabulary, listening and speaking instruction; extensive practice in reality-based conversations; and practice of skills learned in the classroom.

On the first day of class, you will take a placement test to determine your English level.

Prerequisite: At least an intermediate-level proficiency in oral and written English as evidenced by your score on our placement exam.

Accent Reduction

Course Description:

If you are a non-native speaker of English with at least an intermediate level command of the language, this course will help you improve  both your pronunciation and fluency. Gain greater proficiency in the sounds and the rhythm of American English speech. Included is an intensive study of English phonetics, intonation, and stress. Class size is limited to 12.

Prerequisite: Intermediate-level command of English

Student has completed Level 3 in the ESL program or has earned the appropriate score on the placement exam.

Business English

Course Description:

If you are currently working in a business environment, this course can help you communicate more accurately and effectively. Intended for high-intermediate to advanced non-native speakers of English, the course focuses on good professional writing skills, correct English grammar usage, and the vocabulary of meetings and discussions. Instruction is interactive and dynamic and involves group work and audiovisual aids.

Prerequisite: High-intermediate-level command of English as determined by placement test or by completion of Level 4 in the Continuing Education ESL program.

TOEFL Preparation

Course Description:

This course is intended to prepare students for the TOEFL iBT (internet-based test). Students will learn a variety of test-taking strategies with clearly defined steps to maximize their performance on the test. Students will take practice tests on the skills necessary to pass the test. On the first day of class, you will take a test to determine your baseline TOEFL score.

Prerequisite: High-intermediate-level command of English as determined by placement test or by completion of Level 4 in the Continuing Education ESL program.
