Position Numbers for Temporary/Adjunct Assignments

Temporary (OPS) Non-exempt.  This position is used for all non-exempt Temporary (OPS) assignments an employee has as long as they have NO line assignments with benefits.  Both primary and all secondary jobs are Temporary (OPS).

Temporary (OPS) Non-exempt (Primary job is line).  This position number is used ONLY when an employee has a line position with benefits and is working an additional Temporary (OPS) job as well.  Primary job is a line position with benefits and a secondary non exempt Temporary (OPS) job is being processed.

Temporary (OPS)/Adjunct Exempt.  This position number is to be used for all exempt Temporary (OPS)/Adjunct assignments an individual has as long as they have NO line assignments with benefits.  Both primary and all secondary jobs are Temporary (OPS) or Adjunct assignments.

Temporary (OPS)/Adjunct Exempt (Primary job is line).  This position number is to be used ONLY when an employee has a line position with benefits and is working an additional exempt Temporary(OPS)/Adjunct position as well.  Primary job is a line job with benefits and an additional exempt Temporary (OPS) or Adjunct assignment is being processed.

Lump Sum.  This position number is used for individuals receiving lump sum payments that do not have a line position with benefits.

Lump Sum (Primary job is line).  This position number is used to process lump sum payments for individuals that also have a line position with benefits.

DEFINITIONS

  • Temporary (OPS):  A Temporary (OPS) assignment has temporary status and does not include benefits.
  • Adjunct:  An Adjunct assignment is a faculty teaching assignment that does not have benefits and is not permanent.
  • Lump Sum:  This is payment for work/services in a lump sum.
  • Primary Job:  This is the employee's principal job assignment.  Line jobs will always be considered primary over Temporary (OPS)/Adjunct assignments.  If an employee only has Temporary (OPS)/Adjunct assignments, one assignment must be designated as Primary.  An employee can only have one active primary assignment at a time.
  • Secondary Job:  Any job assignment in addition to the primary job.
  • Line Job:  This is an assignment in a permanent position that includes benefits.
  • Exempt:  Exempt status is assigned to positions that meet the requirements of the Department of Labor to be exempt from overtime payment.  Individuals in exempt status position do not earn overtime.  Very specific requirements must be met.  Please refer to Classification & Compensation's  FLSA Regulations website for detailed information.
  • Non-exempt:  Non-exempt status is assigned to positions that do not meet the requirements of the Department of Labor to be exempt from overtime payment.  They are entitled to overtime pay.  Detailed information is available on Classification & Compensation's  FLSA Regulations website.
  • Additional Compensation:
    • For line positions:  This is any assignment given to an employee in addition to their primary line position.
    • For Temporary (OPS)/Adjunct positions:  Additional Compensation only applies to Temporary (OPS)/Adjunct employees if they have active assignments that exceed 40 hours in a work week.
