Practice Safe Computing:

  1. Keep your operating system updated - Whether you have Windows, UNIX, Linux or Mac, go to the vendor's website and update your system's software regularly.
  1. Get Anti-virus and Anti-spyware software - Viruses, worms, and trojans spread through many venues - network, e-mail, instant messaging, and hostile websites. Make sure your computer is updated with the latest definitions files and scan your system regularly for malware/spyware.  Check with your area’s front desk for a copy of Symantec AntiVirus, available to residential students courtesy of FAU’s Student Government Association.
  1. Get a personal firewall -Make sure you have firewall software installed and it is active. Block all communications coming into your system that you don’t initiate.
  1. Keep your system locked away- Always make sure your room is locked before you leave.  If you have a laptop, you may want to take it with you when you go.  Don’t fall prey to theft.
  1. Don’t let others use your system - Letting someone else use or borrow your system can lead to trouble, especially if they know more about computing than you do!

Don't get caught offf-guard! Protect yourself from phishing schemes!

    • Phishing is when a hacker tries to steal your identity by using a copycat web site to trick you to into giving up personal information.
    • Common examples use email claiming that you should enter personal information for online banking or shopping.
    • Most accredited organizations will never contact you by email to obtain personal information.
    • Be careful responding to any email asking for personal and financial information.
