99. Kanybek Nur-tegin, Sanjay Venugopalan, Jessica Young. "Teaching Load and Other Determinants of Research Output Among University Faculty". (2020). Read moreThis paper revisits the determinants of scholarly productivity, with a particular focus on the amount of teaching, using an improved measure of the dependent variable. The authors find that when research output is measured as in the existing literature—based on a simple count of publications—there is a weak negative relationship between the amount of teaching and research. However, when research output is measured based on citation impact, the negative effect of teaching on research is much stronger and more statistically significant, suggesting that faculty with more teaching duties tend to protect the quantity of their research more than the quality.
