Dr. Ely s work focuses on the late-imperial period of Russian history (c. 1861-1917). He is interested in rural landscape and Russian identity as well as urban space and its relation to public culture. He is currently studying the impact changes within Russia s metropolitan centers in the 1860s and 1870s had on the political dynamics of the Russian public sphere.
