Environmental Science

Makenna King entered her freshman year at the Honors College with a goal of studying Environmental Science. A graduate of Jupiter High School, she was attracted to the college by its beautiful campus and Abacoa location. Most recently, Makenna is pursuing her love for the environment and passion for preserving Florida’s native species by working as an intern for FAU’s Center for Environmental Studies. Her primary task in that role is to maintain the Robert J. Huckshorn Arboretum on the Jupiter Campus, organizing a volunteer workforce of students and community members. She also interned at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, where she conducted research to protect and preserve Florida’s native beach flowers. Additionally, Makenna serves as a Boy Scout Camp Counselor, providing outreach to the local community and helping younger scouts learn about and appreciate Florida’s natural landscapes. She also serves as a lifeguard. Makenna is happy to call the Honors College home because of all the opportunities presented to her as well as the small class sizes and close mentoring by faculty. After graduation, Makenna plans to pursue a Ph.D. in environmental science to continue her field research in ecology and to aid in the preservation of native plants and animals.
