The College of Business Master of Health Administration (MHA) Degree is designed to provide graduate level training for professionals who are presently employed or who intend to pursue a career in health administration.

The program is also intended for clinically trained supervisors and managers such as nurses, physicians or physical therapists who are seeking management education either to advance their careers or to enhance their knowledge of the business of health

Health care covers a large number of professional and managerial occupations and is the largest single industry in the U.S. economy.  Furthermore, According to a recent report in Business Week, 45% of all in jobs created in the nation last year were in the health care field. 

The Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation reported that three of the six fastest growing occupations in Broward County are in the Click on myflorida.com logo to go homehealth care field. One of the two best paying occupations gaining the most new jobs in Broward County is in the health care field.

 Who Should Enroll?

The typical student enrolling in this program will most likely come from one of four groups:

1. Recent graduates of undergraduate Health Administration Programs or Business programs who want to further prepare for a non-clinical career in a health care or related field.

2. Graduates of clinical programs ---medicine, physical therapy, nursing, etc--- who want to pursue a management career or who want to develop management skills.

3. Clinical practitioners and aspiring administrators seeking to make a career change or wanting to move into an administrative position.

4. Individuals from other areas seeking to change careers

 

 

 

 

                        MHA Course of Study

 

The course of study includes courses from the MBA curriculum and students with previous coursework in business administration, who meet MBA admissions criteria, can pursue a joint MHA/MBA degree.

 

          Credit Hrs.

  • The MHA comprises 36-39 semester hours of study  (30 if applicants meet prerequisite foundation requirements and have prior work experience)

  • The joint MBA/MHA consists of 61-73 credit hours

Fulltime students can complete the Master of Health Administration Degree program in as little as 16 months and the joint MHA/MBA program in two and one half years.

Students who do not have a minimum of two years of previous work experience in healthcare or a related field are urged to register for MAN 6943 in addition to the prescribed coursework.

 HSA 6107  Health Care Management I

Study of internal operations of healthcare organizations varying from hospitals to nursing homes, out-patient clinics, and assisted living facilities.  Examines issues such as board governance, physician credentialing, resource utilization, and organizational structure. 

 HSA 6108  Health Care Management II

Study of the rapidly evolving U.S. healthcare market and its impact on the structure and functions of healthcare organizations.  Examines changing patient demographics such as population aging, technological developments in such areas as pharmaceuticals, and government regulation of patient care.

HSA 6146  Health Policy

Provides an understanding of the leading health concerns of the day, including Medicare prescription drug benefit, the uninsured, managed care, and the pros and cons of universal health insurance, a market-oriented system and a government system.  Analytic frameworks for understanding the policy and politics of health care are the backbone for understanding current health care issues.

                                       HSA 6420  Health Law                               

A comprehensive examination of health law issues affecting healthcare providers.  Reviews case law decisions, statutes, and regulations involving such issues as patient care liability, malpractice, workman’s compensation, and legal responsibilities of health professionals. 

 HSA  6103 Introduction to Health Care Systems

This course introduces students to the health care system and the issues confronting today’s health care administrators.  Among the issues covered are population treatment models, systems organization, health outcome disparities, health care technology, and ethics.

 HSA 6175 Health Care Finance

This course examines the complexities of the American system of paying for health care.  Topics include Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, traditional indemnity insurance models, managed care, and evolving approaches to reimbursement

 HSA 6932 Current Topics in Health Care Management

This course examines methods for improving quality of care and reducing medical errors in the U.S. health care system.  A systems approach to traditional quality improvement models is complemented by operations management techniques for systems analysis.   Emphasis is on affecting treatment outcomes and promoting the use of evidence-based approaches to the delivery of health care services.

 HSA  6707 Health Research Methods

 This course introduces students to the field of Health Services Research and the scientific foundations of health care administration.  A comprehensive examination of both quantitative and qualitative methods is included along with a study of data resources, questionnaire design, data analysis and interpretation, and the ethics of research.
