Click to watch video Pygmy Sperm Whale
In the early morning of Sept. 7, a live 10-foot, 873-pound Pygmy Sperm whale came ashore during heavy surf conditions. Marine mammal specialists from the Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Program (MMRC), did a medical evaluation and transported the animal to Harbor Branch. MMRC Program Manager Steve McCulloch coordinated the rescue effort and worked with Dr. Juli Goldstein to obtain blood and other biological samples that may hold the key to the reason for the animal's stranding. On August 2, 1999, three Stenella attenuata dolphins were rescued after stranding on the Atlantic coast north of Vero Beach, Florida.

On August 31, 2000, the Atlantic Bottlenose dolphin known to researchers as C6 was rescued in the Indian River Lagoon after suffering an attack by sharks.

On January 30, 2007, efforts to release an Atlantic Bottlenose dolphin that stranded in November, 2006 proved unsuccessful. "Castaway" restranded four times before efforts were suspended. She was transported to the Marine Mammal Conservancy in Key Largo, Florida for further rehabilitation.

On June 19, 2008 a team of researchers from Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, the National Marine Fisheries Service, Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, Save the Manatee Club and others set out in 5 boats on an intervention mission to locate, capture and treat a juvenile Bottlenose dolphin with a foreign object encircling its body.

On July 19, 2002, an Atlantic Bottlenose dolphin calf stranded near Ponce Inlet on Florida's east coast. The Harbor Branch marine mammal rescue team responded, transporting the young dolphin, "Mayday", over 140 miles south to the institute's stranding facility in Fort Pierce.

On July 20, 2006, two Bottlenose dolphins stranded in Stephen's Creek in Clearwater, Florida. Rescuers from Clearwater Marine Aquarium determined both dolphins had upper respiratory infections, and brought them to the Aquarium for treatment and rehabilitation.
