Seagrasses of the Indian River Lagoon: Limitations after 100 Million Years of Adaptation, presented by Richard L. Turner, Florida Institute of Technology.
Seagrasses have a long history of adaptation to life in the sea, especially to heavy grazing by herbivores such as sea urchins, green turtles, and manatees. But their adaptations and the conditions in the sea place limits on the ability of seagrasses to respond to rapid environmental change and disturbance. Understanding these limitations should help us confront problems in management and restoration of seagrass beds, which form critical habitats in coastal regions worldwide.
