Project Description

In partnership with Harris Corporation, Harbor Branch’s Engineering group designed and constructed five telemetry buoys for the Ocean NET® Project.

These fully autonomous, unmanned systems carry enough fuel to collect seafloor, water column and atmospheric data for 6 months and transmit this information back to shore in real time via satellite.  The buoys were designed to operate in conditions up to sea state 6.

In addition to the surface buoy, Harbor Branch also designed and constructed the sub-sea mooring system capable of anchoring the buoy in over 10,000 feet depths and allowing custom seafloor sensors to be easily plugged into the network.

Ocean NET® currently serves as the backbone for the Cyprus Coastal Ocean Forecasting Observatory System and also has a data collection point off the southern coast of Italy.
