FAU Harbor Branch, Smithsonian to host National Estuaries Day public celebrations at two sites

FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and the Smithsonian Marine Station—will celebrate the occasion this year by hosting companion National Estuaries Day public events. The family events are a fun and informative way to celebrate the cultural, recreational, and environmental importance of the Indian River Lagoon, among the most biologically diverse estuaries in North America.

Harbor Branch will be holding it’s fifth annual NED family event. Event offerings will include informal presentations by staff scientists, live Indian River Lagoon organism displays, hands-on science activities, learning games, children’s entertainment, arts and crafts, food and drink concessions, and pontoon boat eco tours of the lagoon.

Simultaneously, the Smithsonian Marine Station will commemorate the day by hosting a community festival at Museum Pointe Park on South Hutchinson Island (between the Aquarium and Historical Museum). Join exhibitors, entertainers, food venders, and artists as they showcase the national treasure in our own backyard. Pontoon boat eco tours of the lagoon will be offered from this site as well.

A printable flyer with information on both of these events can be found here.

Visitors are encouraged to take the time to visit both locations during the event day. For the convenience of eventgoers, the event hosts will provide free continuous shuttle service to transport guests between Museum Pointe Park and Harbor Branch. For those preferring to travel on their own, parking is available at both locations.

Admission to both events is free, and the festivities will take place from 10am to 3pm, rain or shine. For more information about event day activities occurring at FAU Harbor Branch, please call the Harbor Branch Ocean Discovery Center at 772-242-2293. For information about Museum Pointe Park event day activities, please call 772-465-3271.

National Estuaries Day is an annual nationwide celebration of America’s estuaries — the vibrant coastal areas where rivers meet the sea. Celebrated each year on the last Saturday in September, National Estuaries Day is a great opportunity to learn more about these important ecosystems and how citizens can help to protect them.
