ACTED Home
We offer workshops for individuals at every interest and skill level. Our
workshops are recommended for students, entrepreneurs, biologists, fish
producers, farmers, engineers, environmentalists, natural resource agency
personnel, town/city planners, managers of aquaculture facilities, state and
federal regulatory personnel, educators (K-12 and post-secondary), and others
involved or interested in aquaculture programs.

Opportunities in Aquaculture
May 12-13, 2011 | Cost:
$295 Aquaculture, one of the fastest growing segments of agriculture, offers
unmatched career and business opportunities. This introductory workshop answers
fundamental start-up questions for molluscan, fish, and crustacean aquaculture
ventures. Aquaculture is experienced through demonstrations and
behind-the-scenes tours.
Topics Include
- Introduction to Aquaculture
- Crustacean Aquaculture (shrimp, prawns, crawfish, lobsters, softshell
crabs)
- Molluscan Aquaculture (conch, oysters, clams, and mussels)
- Freshwater and Marine Fish Aquaculture (catfish, tilapia, baitfish, pompano,
cobia)

Aquaculture in the Classroom Teacher Workshop
August 1-3,
2011 | Cost: $175 The intent of this workshop is to provide information in a
user-friendly, efficient manner to educators who have limited aquaculture
experience. The Teach Aquaculture curriculum will be introduced to teachers
interested in incorporating aquaculture into their science or agriculture
programs. Selected lessons and activities will be demonstrated.
Topics Include
- General Biology of Aquaculture Species
- Design and Operation of Growout Production Facilities
- Broodstock Breeding and Hatchery
- Water Quality
- Nutrition
- Harvesting, Processing, and Packaging
- Cultivation of Aquatic Plants and Seaweed

Harbor Branch and USDA-ARS Fish Culture
Techniques
October 17-19, 2011 | Cost: $395 This three-day
beginner to intermediate level workshop highlights up-to-date techniques used in
maturation, spawning, larval husbandry, and production of fresh water and marine
food fish. Students will interact with HBOI and USDA scientists at the Harbor
Branch aquaculture facilities and learn techniques through laboratories and
classroom presentations.
Topics Include
- Overview of finfish aquaculture
- Site selection and facility design
- Water quality and monitoring
- Broodstock management
- Hatchery operations
- Live feeds culture and nutrition
- Biosecurity and health management
Minimum Enrollment: 15 participants

Recirculating Aquaculture Systems: Design, Engineering, and
Operation
October 20-22, 2011 | Cost: $450 Provides in-depth
training on design, operation, and management of recirculating systems for
culturing fresh and saltwater species. Topics cover design criteria and system
construction, water reconditioning and management of water quality, solids
removal, disinfection, biofiltration, hydraulics, pump selection and aeration.
Provides practical considerations for stocking systems and developing feeding
strategies.
Topics Include
- Overview of recirculation systems engineering
- Water quality and monitoring system components
- Engineering design of individual unit processes
- System management
- Health management
- Economic and risk evaluation
Minimum Enrollment: 20 participants

Workshops can not be held if minimum enrollment requirements are not met by
the two-week deadline. Harbor Branch will decide to hold or cancel a workshop a
minimum of two-weeks in advance. A late registration fee of $50 will be added to
the workshop cost if registration is received 10 days or less before the start
of the workshop.
Refund Policy
A non-refundable $25 registration fee is included in the cost for each
workshop. Tuition refunds are issued if you cancel ten business days prior to
the workshop start date. Otherwise, a 50% refund will be given. If Harbor Branch
must cancel the workshop, then we will issue a 100% refund.
Housing
Limited campus housing is available for the following workshops:
- Harbor Branch and USDA-ARS Fish Culture Techniques - October 17-19
- Recirculating Aquaculture Systems – October 20-22
You MUST be registered (paid) for a workshop before you can reserve on-campus
housing. Harbor Branch is not within walking distance of grocery stores or
restaurants. We highly suggest renting a car for your stay in Fort Pierce. The
ACTED Classroom is located approximately 1-mile from campus housing. For more

Food Services
Coffee, beverage and snack breaks are included with the registration fees for
all workshops. There is a cafeteria on campus that is open for breakfast and
lunch.
