1. in Biomedical and Marine Biotechnology, which is dedicated to expediting the discovery and commercialization of new medicines from the sea;
2. in Ocean Energy Technology, which is exploring methods to harness energy from South Florida's ocean currents.

HBOI is involved in research and education in the marine sciences; biological, chemical, and environmental sciences; marine biomedical sciences; marine mammal conservation; aquaculture; and ocean engineering.
