Awards
Faculty mentoring is of primary importance to the success of any graduate student’s educational experience. The mentor has the unique responsibility to ensure students become knowledgeable and sophisticated in their chosen fields of study, while also assisting them in developing the skills and attributes necessary for success after graduation. In addition, effective mentors recognize that graduate education involves describing and explaining the values, norms, and practices of a particular discipline. In this way, mentors gradually transform their graduate students into future intellectual leaders and noteworthy contributors to society.
Award Description
The Excellence in Graduate Mentoring Award is established to recognize and encourage outstanding mentoring of graduate students. Recipients of the award are members of the Graduate Faculty with extraordinary records of excellence and effectiveness with regard to graduate mentoring.
The Award
The recipient receives a plaque, university-wide recognition, and $1,000. Support for this award comes from the Graduate College and the Division of Student Affairs.
Eligibility
The award is open to all Graduate Faculty members who mentor graduate students.

Selection Criteria

Extraordinary commitment and effectiveness as a mentor of graduate students

Demonstrated commitment to creating an environment supportive of graduate student success

Demonstrated record of graduate student success, both during the student’s time at FAU and after graduation
Nomination Procedure
Only one nomination may be submitted per department. The department chair shall submit the following: a letter of nomination; the nominee's vitae; and three letters of support from current and former graduate students of the nominee. The vitae should identify all the graduate students the nominee has mentored. Additional information submitted with the nomination packet will not be considered.
One original and three double-sided copies of each nomination for the Excellence in Graduate Mentoring Award must be received by April 18, 2008. Send nomination packets to:
