FRESHMAN ACADEMIC ADVISING SERVICES

What is Freshman Warning? Probation?

What you need to know

WARNING!!!

  • Freshman Warning is just what it says- a WARNING that your grades are dangerously low and you are in danger of facing consequences from the University (consequences such as having to sit out a semester or being dismissed!).  Freshmen who fail to earn a 2.0 their first semester are placed on FRESHMAN WARNING. Students on warning are required to meet with their academic advisor in FAAS for special assistance in improving their academic performance.  If you have received notice you are on Warning, NOW is the time to take steps to improve your academic standing.  Don’t wait until the end of your second semester (or even mid semester) to take action.  If a student fails to improve their GPA after their first semester, (See when will I get off Freshman Warning?) they move from Freshman Warning to probation.

  • Probation.  Besides first semester freshman, all other undergraduate students whose semester GPA or cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 will be placed on probation.

  • Suspension and Dismissal (Use the tips on this website and you won’t have to be concerned with this!) A student on academic probation who fails to earn a 2.0 average in all coursework attempted in any given term and who has a cumulative GPA below 2.0 will be suspended from the university.  The student is eligible to return after one semester and if permitted to return will be on probation.  If at any time after having once been suspended a student on probation has a term and cumulative GPA below 2.0, the student will be dismissed.  A dismissed student may not re-enter the university except through the approval of the student’s college.  Appeals for re-entry are not considered unless the student has been out of the university for at least one year.

  • How to calculate your GPA

Now that you are paying particular attention to your GPA you need to know how to calculate what you may be expecting next semester.  Your GPA (grade point average) is calculated by dividing the sum of all grade points earned at FAU by the total number of credits attempted.  Courses in which grades of “P”, “W” or “WM” have been received are not used in calculating GPA.

Grades A through D- are given the following point values:

Grade           Grade point per credit hour
  A                                 4.00
  A-                                3.67
  B+                                3.33
  B                                  3.00
  B-                                2.67
  C+                                2.33
  C                                  2.00
  C-                                 1.67
  D+                                1.33
  D                                  1.00
  D-                                0.67
  F                                  0.00

To calculate your cumulative (this is a bit more tricky), you can use the GPA Calculator located on our webpage.  Follow the instructions on the page. You can also use the GPA calculator to determine exactly what grades you will need to achieve to get the GPA you are working towards.  (GPA calculator)

  • Important dates to be aware of – Understanding the policies, procedures and university calendar will be vital to your academic success.  Review and know important dates that could affect you directly.   (Academic Calendar)
