Each student has an assigned academic advisor.   Students should contact the FAAS Office to determine who their advisor is and to schedule an appointment.  Academic advising is a partnership.  Both the student and the advisor come together to develop an academic action plan aimed at meeting curriculum requirements that will lead to the fulfillment of a student’s career goals.

When should I meet with my advisor?

Students should make an appointment to meet with their advisor PRIOR to advance registration to discuss the classes they will be taking in the upcoming semester.   All students with less than 30 credits are required to meet with their advisor and will have a UN hold placed on their registration preventing them from registering until they do so.   You should also consult your advisor throughout the semester, if you are experiencing academic difficulty, have been placed on Freshman Warning or Probation or have any problems / concerns you want to discuss.

What should I do BEFORE my advising appointment?

• Check out the FAAS web site to familiarize yourself with information on advising, registration and degree requirements

• Review the curriculum guide for your major and plan out several classes you would like to take, be prepared to discuss this with your advisor

• If you are planning to take courses at a community college, have the course prefix and numbers to share with your advisor

What will happen DURING my advising session?

During the advising session the advisor will:

• Assist you in planning a suitable schedule of classes

• Work with you to help define and develop realistic goals in keeping with your abilities, interests and stated major

• Be knowledgeable about the various degree programs and requirements

• Provide information and clarification regarding University policies and procedures

• Discuss with student’s their academic performance and its implications

• Refer students to available on campus student support resources when appropriate
  

During the advising session the student should:

• Make the advisor aware of any transfer credits or college credits earned by examination i.e., AP, IB or CLEP

• Raise questions about and openly explore academic and general career options with the advisor

• Discuss with the advisor unsatisfactory academic performance and its implications so that appropriate remedies can be initiated

• Develop a plan of courses to register for the upcoming semester(s) with the Course Projection Sheet

What should I do AFTER my advising session?

• Follow up on any recommendations/ referrals made by your advisor

• If you were advised for classes, choose your class times from the course schedule of classes and register through MyFAU for the courses on your Course Projection Sheet

• If you make any changes to the courses planned, contact your advisor to make sure the changes are appropriate

• Be sure to contact your advisor if you run into any academic difficulty

• Inform you advisor of any changes that directly affect academic performance and educational goals

• Periodically meet with the advisor to ensure degree requirements are being met
