INTENSIVE BEGINNING FRENCH
For those students interested in learning French quickly through daily immersion, we are now offering FRE 1150, Intensive Beginning French, in Summer Session A.
This course is ideal for students with no previous knowledge of French wishing to gain rapid and thorough knowledge of French for school, for work, or for participation on the FAU Study Abroad Program in Southern France.
This course combines FRE 1120 and FRE 1121 (Beginning French Language and Culture I and II) in an intensive one-semester unit. Emphasis is placed on the “four skills”: speaking, aural comprehension, reading, and writing. This course, taught entirely in the target language, is intended for students with little or no background in the language, and is therefore not open to native speakers or the equivalent. Since the acquisition of relevant cultural information is also an integral part of this course, students visit “live” French websites and media outlets, and watch French movies and newscasts.
This first-year intensive French language course is designed to allow BEGINNING students to develop effective communication skills through listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the target language. To achieve this goal, the course is taught using the communicative approach, a pedagogy aimed at developing language skills and an appreciation of the cultures of the speakers of that language through carefully structured, naturally paced dialogue exclusively in the target language. The language of instruction is French, and even grammatical explanations are provided in a communicative way and in the target language.
