The Office of Student Conduct is seeking FAU faculty to serve as University Hearing Officers. Hearing Officers are a vital part of the conduct process and are called upon on an as-needed basis. Student Financial Services (part of the Controller's Office) is moving on Friday, Sept. 2 to SU80 (Student Services Building) Suite 130 (downstairs) and will be without computer and telephone service all day, but will be open in the new location to assist with questions. September is Safety Month at FAU . Events run through Thursday, Sept. 29 on the Boca Raton, Broward, Jupiter and Treasure Coast campuses. FAU faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate in a variety of events related to safety. The events will focus on topics such as healthy lifestyles and relationships, personal property security, CPR/AED training, pedestrian and personal safety, alcohol and drug abuse, cell phone use while driving, sexual health and safety, hurricane readiness and online safety. NW 8th Ave. (FAU Blvd.) is detoured from NW 32nd St. to NW 35th St. for approximately four weeks. The detour will direct northbound traffic toward Spanish River Blvd. around a two-block detour -- east on NW 32nd St., north on 6th Ave. and west on NW 35th St. back to NW 8th Ave. to Spanish River Blvd. Southbound from Spanish River Blvd., the detour is reversed -- east on NW 35th St., south on 6th Ave. and west on NW 32nd St. to NW 8th Ave. heading south, or into the PBSC entrance at NW 32nd St. The PBSC entrance at NW 32nd St. will remain open.

Alternative routes are available as well. Northbound, turn left at PBSC Drive, north of the new Housing complex, for easy access to PBSC parking and to Lot 5. Southbound from Spanish River Blvd., turn right onto Palm Beach Ave. (old tarmac) to Lot 5, Lee St. and PBSC.

NOTE: A traffic light at the intersection of FAU Blvd. and Lee St. will not be installed until October -- the intersection will be marked as a four-way stop until that time. Through August, roadwork will occur along the eastern side of FAU Blvd. near Spanish River Blvd. The existing northbound lanes will be diverted to the median that was temporarily patched with asphalt. Two lanes will remain open at all times (with possible exceptions on weekends). Beginning on or about Sept. 1, the work will switch to the western side of FAU Blvd. and continue through September. The existing southbound lanes will be diverted to the median that was temporarily patched with asphalt. Two lanes will remain open at all times (with possible exceptions on weekends).

The Office of International Programs has issued its annual call for new or repeat Study Abroad Programs (SAP) for 2011-12, for overseas courses to be led by FAU faculty and instructional staff that will take place during the AY 2011-12 year, any intersession or spring break, and summer 2012. All program proposals received in a timely manner will be processed and approved through the Provost Office in time to be advertised at the Annual October 2011 Study Abroad Fair. The deadline or proposals is Sept. 12. Past practice has shown that early advertising is a critical factor in recruiting adequate numbers of students to allow a program to run, and allowing students to plan ahead for the cost of the program they have chosen. The Division of Research is pleased to announce the second year of funding for the Faculty Mentoring Program. In order to foster the exchange of ideas and best practices in funded research, senior colleagues with significant extramural funding experience are paired with tenure-track faculty members who wish to be mentored and commit to submitting a fundable research proposal at the end of the one-year mentoring period. The mentor will receive a monetary award of $1,000, and the mentee will receive $2,000. The mentor and mentee can be from the same college or department, but it is not required.

The Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at FAU Libraries is accepting applications for its Helen M. Salzberg Artist-in-Residence Program for the Spring 2012 semester. Established this year by Salzberg, a folk artist and poet, the program allows artists working in the book arts to spend 12 weeks working, teaching workshops and mentoring students at the Jaffe Center, which is located on the third floor of the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus.

The artist in residence will receive a $5,000 stipend for the 12-week semester and is responsible for transportation, housing, parking, meals and materials a required creative project. The Jaffe Center revolves around a core collection of artists' books and focuses on all aspects of the book arts, including hand papermaking and paper decoration, letterpress printing and alternative print techniques, and bookbinding.

On Sept. 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the FAU High School, the documentary "Coexist" will be shown. Coexist explores the painful and personal stories of Rwandan genocide survivors as they are made to try to reconcile with perpetrators being released back into their communities from prison. Coexist masterfully captures the nuance and complexity of the process of dehumanization and rehumanization that takes place during genocide and in its aftermath. The Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts is celebrating the number 0.918 inches, the standard height of wood and metal type in the U.S. and U.K. at its second annual Letterpress Appreciation Day Open House on Sunday, Sept. 18, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus. There will be tours of the center's letterpress studio and printing both on the center's antique Wesel Iron Handpress and on its Vandercook 4 Proofing Press. Twesigye Jackson Kaguri will share the stirring story behind the founding of the Nyaka AIDS Orphans School. Weaving together tales from his youth with the inspiring account of building the school, Mr. Kaguri will show how one person with little more than an idea and a passion to help is capable of achieving monumental results. With remarkable determination, he has pursued a seemingly impossible dream and in the process has transformed many lives, including his own. Mr. Kaguri's organization has thus far built two primary schools in Uganda (grades 1 to 7) serving 417 students, 53% of whom are girls. His organization's holistic approach not only provides a free education, but also two meals a day, health care and health education for the students and their families, and a clean water system. What will I do?
Fill out a Physical Activity Questionnaire and perform a manual cognitive function test.

What can I expect to get out of my participation?
You will gain an understanding of how physical fitness is related to cognitive health. You will also be given the option of having your body composition measured and given an exercise prescription, a $75 value.

The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you.
