FAU will host a series of events during Disability Awareness Month -- October. Click here for the press release listing the month's events. The events will offer several opportunities for students to gain first-hand experience of what it is like to live with a disability. More than 650 students are currently registered with the FAU Office for Students with Disabilities, where staff provide students with documented disabilities the academic support services and accommodations they need to give them equal access to all the academic programs at FAU. Along with the Office for Students with Disabilities, the events are sponsored by several FAU organizations, including Campus Recreation, CARD, the FAU Program Board, the Owls Supporting Diversity (OSD) Club and Stand Among Friends.

October has been designated National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), a consortium consisting of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and partners from federal, state and local government, academia and industry. The NCSAM program at FAU will focus on educating students, faculty and staff about how to secure their parts of cyberspace, mobile devices, laptops, tablets, desktop computers, their passwords, personal information and data as well as the University's critical infrastructure. As part of the nationwide NCSAM effort, Office of Information Technology (OIT) is sponsoring cyber security events at FAU throughout October, including a series of informative presentations during the week of Oct. 24 to 28. Beginning at 10 p.m. the day before a home game, the following lots will be closed and the all private vehicles left in these lots will be removed: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 25, 26, 27 and 30

At 6 a.m. the following road closures will occur:
- West University Drive (Broward Ave.) will be closed at Volusia Street.
- North University Drive (Lee Street) will be closed at FAU Blvd.
- Access to NEW FAU Blvd. (St. Lucie Ave.) will be prohibited between North University Drive (Lee Street) and PBSC Drive.
- No game-day traffic will be permitted to enter the campus via the NW 20th Street entrance.
- Limited access to Indian River Street between East University Drive (Old FAU Blvd.) and Brevard Ct. (only resident students, staff and patrons of the Living Room Theater will be permitted access).

ANY DEPARTMENT WITH ACTIVITIES OCCURING ON GAME DAY THAT REQUIRE ACCESS TO ANY OF THE LOTS OR ROADWAYS AFFECTED BY GAME-DAY OPERATIONS MUST CONTACT THE DIVISON OF PARKING AND TRANSPORTAION.

FAU students planning to study abroad for Spring 2012, Summer 2012 and AY 2012-13 can now apply for two different types of U.S. federal grants:

The Benjamin Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad is taking applications for Spring Semester 2012 programs, the deadline is Oct. 4, 2011. Enrolled undergraduate students can apply for up to $5,000 to help with program costs. Students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, those going to non traditional study locations or learning critical languages, and those studying in fields underrepresented in study abroad are particularly encouraged to apply for a Gilman award. Students apply online and need to have their application certified by the campus representatives for financial aid and study abroad. The Boren Award for Study Abroad is also available for the 2012-13 Academic Year. Boren Awards provide a unique funding opportunity for U.S. students to study in world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. The Boren Scholarships provide opportunities for undergraduate students to study in countries that are generally underrepresented in study abroad. Summer 2012 programs for STEM areas are also allowed. The FAU campus deadline for undergraduates is Jan. 11, 2012; after a campus review the final application must be sent by Feb. 9, 2012. The Boren Fellowships allow graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate studies. The next deadline for submission of applications for undergraduate research grants is Oct. 17. Please keep in mind that the research or creative activity conducted by the student generally takes the form of directed research, independent study, or work on an honors thesis under the supervision of a faculty member, rather than work conducted to fulfill regular course or seminar requirements. Faculty mentorship is one of the most important elements of undergraduate research. Students receiving funding under this program are expected to present their findings at the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on April 6, 2012. The Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at FAU Libraries is accepting applications for its Helen M. Salzberg Artist-in-Residence Program for the Spring 2012 semester. Established this year by Salzberg, a folk artist and poet, the program allows artists working in the book arts to spend 12 weeks working, teaching workshops and mentoring students at the Jaffe Center, which is located on the third floor of the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus.

The artist in residence will receive a $5,000 stipend for the 12-week semester and is responsible for transportation, housing, parking, meals and materials a required creative project. The Office of Equal Opportunity Programs has scheduled an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Workshop for Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon, BOT Conference Room, Admin Bldg., Boca Raton campus. This is a workshop for supervisors and managers titled "The Americans with Disabilities Act: Keys to Employment Success". It is the last time it will be scheduled this year.

The objective is to provide supervisors and managers with practical guidance regarding performance and conduct issues in an ADA context. We will discuss:
- How to engage the employee in a conversation about a perceived disability -- what can you ask and when can you ask it;
- Whether you should give a low performance rating to an employee who has just informed you that they have a disability;
- When you may or may not discipline an employee with a disability for violating a conduct standard;

Join faculty artists for the SMART Ride Art Exhibit 2011, Oct. 11 through 27 at FAU's Second Avenue Studio, located on the first floor of the Askew Tower at FAU Fort Lauderdale, 220 SE 2nd Ave. Drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures by 16 renowned regional artists, including FAU faculty members from multiple disciplines, will be on exhibit. Artwork will be available for auction at the opening reception on Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. and will benefit The SMART Ride, an event which brings together hundreds of individuals each November on a two-day charitable bike ride from Miami to Key West to raise funds for local agencies serving people living with HIV/AIDS. "Time Flies When You're Having Fun," an exhibition honoring Arthur Jaffe, founder and curator of the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center, has been extended through Sunday, Oct. 9, at the Wimberly Library. The library-wide exhibition features a timeline of Jaffe's life, photographs, ephemera, and artists' books and broadsides that artists donated in honor his birthday and the announcement of his retirement. Jaffe also received the Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from FAU President Mary J. Saunders during spring commencement ceremonies. "The Art of the Image: Photography by Nathan Dean," an eclectic mix of images captured by Nathan Dean, an award-winning photographer and professor emeritus of the Charles E. Dean's images are notable for their simple, clean composition and brilliant use of light and shadow. The University Galleries presents the 2011 Biennial Faculty Exhibition through Nov. 12, in the Schmidt and Ritter Galleries on the Boca Raton campus. There is a clinical research study of an investigational medication being conducted at the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine for people with Major Depressive Disorder. Older adults, 55-75 years of age and older, are wanted for the following study: "Relationship between Cognitive Function and Physical Activity Levels"

What are the requirements for participation?
Good health and be able to make a one-time (brief) visit to the FAU Exercise Science Lab.

What will I do?
Fill out a Physical Activity Questionnaire and perform a manual cognitive function test.

What can I expect to get out of my participation?
You will gain an understanding of how physical fitness is related to cognitive health. You will also be given the option of having your body composition measured and given an exercise prescription, a $75 value.

How long will the visit last?
About 30-40 minutes

The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. Services are available Monday through Friday during every semester on a space-available basis. Appointments for diagnostic or treatment services may be made by calling Maria at 561-297-2258. Payment can now be made by VISA or MasterCard.

The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details. FAU faculty and staff members and their families receive a 50 percent discount for all services. Full-time FAU students receive a 50 percent discount for evaluations and then are charged $10 per treatment session.
