Hurricane Sandy may have complicated this year's Homecoming festivities, but it wasn't able to blow Fall Family Fest away! The annual celebration has been rescheduled to take place today, Nov. 15, in conjunction with the Green Market at FAU Stadium. The Fall Family Fest will begin at 4 p.m., with attractions set up in the nearby tailgating/lawn area west of the stadium. All faculty and staff are encouraged to bring their family to the Fall Family Fest, which features free food, entertainment, games and prizes. The Green Market vendors will display their wares on the Stadium Plaza beginning at 3 p.m. Come one, come all, and don't forget to wear your FAU gear to show your support for our football team, which will go up against FIU on Friday, Nov. 16. The Division of Research is pleased to announce the second year of a University-wide Faculty Research Seed Grant Program to foster increased extramural funding by facilitating the development of innovative research ideas and collaborations that will lead to successful grant applications. A total of $250,000 is available to support this program. However, the number of awards funded will depend on the quality and types of proposals submitted. The maximum award amounts are $20,000 for collaborative awards and $5,000 for individual awards. A principal investigator can qualify for only one award.

The objectives of the seed grant program are to:
- Encourage groups of researchers to collaborate on new avenues of research that otherwise would not be possible if explored independently.
- Assist early stage researchers to establish themselves as independent investigators by facilitating a record of preliminary research that will lead to successful grant applications in the future.
- Support researchers who received favorable reviews for their proposals but were unsuccessful with funding due to recommendations to perform additional research or testing.

Not only do rising home foreclosures and growing personal debt continue to threaten the viability of what the lecturer calls the "Consumers' Republic," but it is not clear how, if not through greater consumption, the United States will work its way out of recession. Can we still consume our way to recovery -- or not?

The Department of Visual Arts and Art History in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters presents "Deca," an exhibition featuring works by students graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in visual arts and art history. Barbara Ashbrook, assistant director of the Division of Education Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), will discuss NEH programs and funding opportunities on Monday, Nov. 26, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. (venue TBA). Ashbrook has played a central role in building the agency's programs to support the intellectual development of educators at every level, which remains a primary commitment of the Education division. Barbara has oversight on several grant programs including Landmarks of American History and Culture, Enduring Questions and Bridging Cultures at Community Colleges. On the evening of Saturday, Dec. 1, the FAU Astronomical Observatory will be celebrating Jupiter's Opposition to the Sun. from 7 p.m. until 2 a.m. This will be the last solar opposition for Jupiter until 2014. A planet in opposition means that the Earth will be as close as we can be to the planet for this orbital pass. Throughout the night, we'll get to observe a variety of events that will also occur. Jupiter's moon Io will emerge from behind the planet at 9:53 - 9:57 p.m. and Jupiter's famous Great Red Spot will emerge from its far side at 10:30 pm, will reach mid-transit at 12:37 a.m. and finally return to Jupiter's far side by 2 a.m. While lately "Rose" might be a better descriptive color for it, the Great Red Spot is Jupiter's famous "anti-cyclonic" storm that can be three times the size of the Earth, thus puts any superstorm that we have to shame! The timing of its transit on this particular night will provide an excellent opportunity to see it as well! The presentation that will be provided will provide information about Jupiter and its moons and lead into a discussion about the formation of the solar system, how some of our information about Jupiter conflicts with this formation theory, present newer interesting theories about how it could have occurred and finally a bit about the Juno spacecraft, launched last year to the great planet and which may help answer some of these questions.

The Jewish Cultural Society (JCS) at Florida Atlantic University is hosting "Joyful Melodies: Celebrating Hanukkah with KCO," a concert featuring Maestro Aaron Kula and the Klezmer Company Sextet (KCO), at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 2, on the fifth floor of the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is for exceptional college students who intend to pursue careers in science, mathematics, or engineering. Students intending to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in private practice. Applicants must be a full-time matriculated sophomore or junior with a GPA of at least a B, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. For the 2010-2011 academic year, winners had an average GPA of 3.95. FAU internal deadline is December 15.

The Truman Scholarship is a $30,000 merit based grant awarded to outstanding undergraduate juniors who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government, the non-profit sector or elsewhere in public service. FAU internal deadline is January 5.

The Morris Udall is for sophomores or juniors interested in environmental studies; or Native American/Alaskan sophomores or juniors. The FAU internal deadline is January 31.

The NSEP/Boren is for undergrads to study abroad and work in national security. The FAU internal deadline is January 13.

The James Madison is for seniors or recent graduates for graduate study to teach in history or political science and has a deadline of March 1. The Madison does not require FAU nomination.

"Student Body Art," a photography exhibition of students and their tattoos by visual artist Z. Koppisch, will be on display at the John D. MacArthur Campus Library Gallery. FAU Jupiter, from Thursday, Sept. 13, through Friday, Dec. 14. The photos are from "Stories on the Skin: Tattoo Culture at FAU," a long-term creative collaboration between the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at FAU's Wimberly Library and Karen Leader, Ph.D., of FAU's Department of Visual Arts and Art History. Koppisch, an FAU alumna, is a photographer and senior designer at the Wimberly Library. Students from the Jupiter campus are invited to add their ink to the archive by being photographed and/or videotaped at the reception. The exhibition's hours are Mondays through Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.

FAU's University Galleries in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters present the "New Art: South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artists Fellowship" exhibition from Saturday, Sept. 22 through Saturday, Dec. 15. The exhibition will be presented in both the Schmidt Center Gallery and the Ritter Art Gallery on the Boca Raton campus,. There will be an opening reception with music and a cash bar on Saturday, September 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Miami-based band Gold Dust Lounge will provide music during the second half of the event at the Ritter Art Gallery.

The exhibition presents 11 artists from Florida's five southeastern counties who have won a highly competitive and generous annual grant awarded by the South Florida Cultural Consortium. This year's South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship winners are Nellie Appleby (Monroe County), Domingo Castillo (Miami Dade), Clifton Childree (Miami Dade), Jiae Hwang (Miami Dade), Nicolas Lobo (Miami Dade), Ernesto Oroza (Miami Dade), Tom Scicluna (Miami Dade), Eric Landes (Broward County), Mark Moormann (Broward County), John Sanchez (Broward County) and Phillip Estlund (Palm Beach County). The artists are selected through a two-step judging process by first a regional panel and then a national panel of visual arts professionals. Over 300 artists apply each year, in part because the grant award for each artist of either $15,000 or $7,500 is among the nation's highest for individual artists.

"Born from Folding: The Art & Science of Origami" is now open at the Wimberly Library in the Boca Raton campus. It is best viewed during daylight hours, when the natural light from the windows of the library lobby streams through the tessellation patterns of the origami on display. Check www.library.fau.edu/geninfo/hours.htm for hours. The Vanessa Gould documentary "Between the Folds" (Green Fuse Films, 2009) is the inspiration for the exhibition. The film explores the artistic importance of origami and then moves on to origami's connections to the world beyond art: to math, to science, to engineering. "All of these paperfolders," Gould says, "artists and scientists alike, whether producing beautiful objects or finding new ways to fold airbags or space telescopes, are involved in a creative effort." Featured origami artists: Christiane Bettens, Philip Chapman-Bell, Joel Cooper, Erik Demaine, Martin Demaine, Lydia Diard, Christine Edison, Melina Hermsen, Andrew Hudson, Peter Keller, Ralf Konrad, Yoshinobu Miyamoto and Matthew Shlian.

Each year the Office of International Programs holds a photo competition and exhibit to celebrate and highlight the amazing moments captured by our students while studying abroad. Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. Services are available Monday through Friday during every semester on a space-available basis. Appointments for diagnostic or treatment services may be made by calling Maria at 561-297-2258. The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details. FAU faculty and staff members and their families receive a 50 percent discount for all services. Full-time FAU students receive a 50 percent discount for evaluations and then are charged $10 per treatment session.
