All components of the FAU Alert system, including email, text messaging, telephone call-out messages, the indoor notification system for Glades Park/Heritage Park towers and the siren/PA system outdoor warning sirens on the Boca Raton, Harbor Branch and Jupiter campuses, will be tested on Thursday, June 28, beginning at 10:55 a.m.

It is essential that all active students, faculty (including adjuncts) and staff update their telephone contact information every semester. Please do so now by logging into MyFAU at myfau.fau.edu, clicking successively on "FAU Self-Service (OWLS)," "Personal Information," "Update FAU Alert Telephone Numbers" and following the instructions.

Be aware that only currently enrolled students and active faculty and staff will receive the test email, text and telephone call-out message.

IMPORTANT: Faculty and staff members should give their own individual extensions rather than the main office number. The only exception is for secretaries and receptionists who routinely answer the main number. Using your own extension will prevent multiple calls from going to the main number.

During the test, please note:
- For text message alerts to your phone, you will see "Code = 630-79 or 231-77" as the sender of the incoming alert message. Please save this number and program it as FAU so that you can quickly recognize this number as the official source of FAU's messages.
- For voice alerts, the caller ID will show 888-832-8695. When you answer the call and say "Hello," you will hear the recorded message. As above, add this number to your contacts under "FAU" as well.
- Email alerts will now come from faualert@fau.edu. As above, add this address to your contacts under "FAU" as well.
- The emergency siren and PA system will be activated on the Boca Raton, Harbor Branch and Jupiter campuses. A loud siren sound and a spoken message will be heard across campus, as well as in nearby neighborhoods and business areas.

All layers of the FAU Alert system will be tested; however, in an actual emergency, depending on the situation, the appropriate systems will be used, i.e., email, text messaging, web announcements and siren/PA alerts.

The Department of Theatre has announced an additional Big Band Jazz Concert on Sunday, July 29, 3 p.m. (The original July 28 concert is sold out.) The concert is part of Festival Rep 2012, more information and tickets at www.fau.edu/festivalrep.

No classes will be held and all FAU offices will be closed on Wednesday, July 4, in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

Lot 24 will be closed on July 2-4 and most of Lot 23 will be closed on July 3-4, for the City of Boca Raton's Fabulous Fourth celebration on the Boca Raton campus. The U.S. Student Fulbright Program for 2013-14 is now open. FAU students who will graduate with a bachelor’s degree by summer 2013 or are a recent FAU graduate may apply for a year’s funding (up to $20,000) to study overseas or teach English overseas. The mandatory FAU campus deadline is Monday, Sept. 17, and the final Fulbright deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the largest U.S. exchange program offering opportunities for students and young professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching and primary and secondary school teaching worldwide. The program currently awards approximately 1,800 grants annually in all fields of study, and operates in more than 155 countries worldwide. Fulbright U.S. Student alumni populate an entire range of professions and include ambassadors, members of Congress, judges, heads of corporations, university presidents, journalists, artists, professors, and teachers. When CB's dog dies from rabies, CB begins to question the existence of an afterlife. His best friend is too burnt out to provide any coherent speculation; his sister has gone goth; his ex-girlfriend has recently been institutionalized; and his other friends are too inebriated to give him any sort of solace. But a chance meeting with an artistic kid, the target of this group's bullying, offers CB a peace of mind and sets in motion a friendship that will push teen angst to the very limits. Domestic Duality, a free exhibition of self-portraits by Patricia Gutierrez runs Friday, May 25, through Friday, Aug. 10, at the FAU Jupiter Library Gallery. The exhibition is a series of computer manipulated, staged self-portraits that show a woman hiding behind a facade that does not really exist. Patricia Schnall Gutierrez, the artist, has dedicated her work to examining women's roles throughout her career. Whether you call them pop-up books or moveable books, there's no doubt that books with elements that pop up, slide, twirl and change before your eyes are just plain fun. And fun is the general idea behind this great collection of books recently given to FAU Libraries by Arthur J. Williams. The Arthur J. Williams Pop-Up Collection is comprised of 425 pop-up and moveable books, and the collection has found a perfect home at FAU Libraries' Jaffe Center for Book Arts, where it is permanently housed, enabling students and researchers an opportunity to study the mechanics of pop-ups. The exhibition is displayed in the Jaffe Center for Book Arts and throughout the rest of the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus.

Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details.
