The Green Market @ FAU kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 30 with a grand opening from 4 to 8 p.m. at the FAU Stadium Plaza on the Boca Raton campus. With "Day at the Beach" theme, Thursday's market will begin with a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. and special guests including FAU President Mary Jane Saunders. Students, faculty, staff and members of the community are invited to bring beach chairs and umbrellas to this event, which will feature organic foods, musical entertainment and various outdoor activities around the Stadium.

The Owls will play their first home game on Friday, Aug. 31, at 8 p.m. vs. the Wagner Seahawks. Note that North University Drive from the Lot 9 entrance to NW 8th Ave. will be closed in both directions beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday.

As the season begins, please review the following information to ensure the safety of entire University community:
- FAU has a no-tolerance policy for under-age drinking at all University events, both on and off campus.
- The "Rat's Mouth" student tailgate area has been moved to a spot outside the stadium under the video board between gates two and three. This new location provides easy access to the student gates and the team store.
- The University has established an alcohol and tailgating policy to ensure a safe environment at all FAU events (scroll down to pages 4 and 5 for the section on tailgating).

The University has received word of the death of Dr. Edmund Skellings, Poet Laureate of Florida and a former FAU faculty member who was decades ahead of his time in marrying poetry with moving images to create unique works of art. He ultimately became an enormously productive innovator in the emerging field of computer graphics, gaining national recognition as a pioneer in the use of electronic technology in the arts, humanities and education.

Dr. Skellings joined the FAU faculty in 1967, teaching poetry and Shakespeare courses at the University's Dade County outreach center in Miami Beach. He left FAU in 1973, returning in 1990 as the founding director of the Florida Center for Electronic Communication, which was based on FAU's downtown Fort Lauderdale campus for 16 years. Utilizing a supercomputer, the Center produced multimedia educational materials that were shown at video festivals around the world and broadcast on public television. In 1998, he introduced FAU's master of fine arts degree in computer arts, which at that time was the only program of its kind at a public university in the southeastern United States. Fifty students had completed the program by the time Dr. Skellings retired from FAU in 2006.

During his long career, Dr. Skellings constantly broke new ground in finding ways to speak to the sensibilities of people of all ages by combining his skills as a poet and computer art visionary. In 1980, Governor Bob Graham conferred the title of Poet Laureate of Florida upon him, an honor that was designated for his entire lifetime. He was the author of seven books of poetry.

Dr. Skellings died at his home in Melbourne, Florida, on Aug. 19. He is survived by his wife, Louise. There will be several celebrations of his life, the first of which will be at the Florida State Poets Association convention in Daytona Beach on Oct. 12.

As part of Safety Month at FAU, the department of Environmental Health and Safety is sponsoring a Safety Video contest. The Division of Student Affairs invites students, faculty and staff from all campuses to serve on the 2012 -13 Student Conduct Board. According to the Student Code of Conduct (Regulation 4.007), board members are "person(s) authorized by the University to determine whether a student has violated the Student Code of Conduct and may recommend sanctions that may be imposed to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students."

What does the Conduct Board do? The primary responsibility of the Student Conduct Board is to hear cases brought against students accused of violating the Florida Atlantic University Code of Conduct (Regulation 4.007). In a hearing, a panel of faculty/staff and students consider information and witness statements presented and determine if the student is responsible for the violation. If the student is found responsible for the alleged violation, the Conduct Board will make a recommendation to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students.

What does it mean to be a part of the Student Conduct Board? Becoming a board member means you will be called upon periodically to hear minor and/or major student conduct cases. We are looking for students and faculty/staff who can be analytical, objective and responsible. A board member must be able to work cooperatively in a group, articulating his or her own point of view while considering the opinions of others. Members of the Conduct Board are expected to maintain strict confidentiality and to uphold the ethical standards of the University community, both personally and in their capacity as board members.

What is the time commitment? Hearings are scheduled on a case by case basis, Monday through Friday between noon and 5 p.m. Depending on the complexity of the case, hearings last two to three hours. Board members are assigned to cases depending on their availability, so scheduling is flexible.

Membership Criteria Expectations:
- Students must attend a mandatory training session on Friday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and any other future mandatory training.
- Faculty/ Staff must attend a mandatory training session on Friday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and any other future mandatory training.
- Become knowledgeable about all aspects of the FAU Student Code of Conduct, which can be found at www.fau.edu/studentconduct/index.php?mainlinks=3.
- Awareness and understanding of the student conduct review process.

BankAtlantic, including the FAU branch, becomes BB&T on Oct. 15. The ATMs on campus are being rebranded and all BankAtlantic cards can continue to be used at no charge. Direct deposits, student financial aid deposits and all pre-authorized drafts (bills paid directly from BankAtlantic checking accounts) will post appropriately for a full year from the conversion date -- through October 2013. BB&T will be communicating with customers via mail regarding the conversion and the process for updating account information, and all conversion-related material should be reviewed closely to avoid any disruptions. - Emails informing the recipient they have won an "Olympic lottery" for which they have not entered.

The Office of International Programs (OIP) at FAU invites applications from FAU faculty and instructional staff for new or recurring Study Abroad Programs (SAP) for Academic Year 2012-13 including intersessions, Spring Break 2013 and Summer 2013. Completed proposals should be sent to OIP by email or hard copy by the close of business Friday, Sept. 14. Approval process for programs will take 1-3 weeks typically. All approved programs will be advertised at the Fall Study Abroad Fair on Oct. 9.

SAP development is initiated by a member of the FAU faculty and instructional staff. Faculty are encouraged to work closely with OIP as early as possible in the process, to take advantage of OIP expertise and experience in SAP development and management. The U.S. Student Fulbright Program for 2013-14 is now open.FAU students who will graduate with a bachelor's degree by summer 2013 or are a recent FAU graduate may apply for a year's funding (up to $20,000) to study overseas or teach English overseas. The mandatory FAU campus deadline is Monday, Sept. 17, and the final Fulbright deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the largest U.S. exchange program offering opportunities for students and young professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching and primary and secondary school teaching worldwide. The program currently awards approximately 1,800 grants annually in all fields of study, and operates in more than 155 countries worldwide. Fulbright U.S. Student alumni populate an entire range of professions and include ambassadors, members of Congress, judges, heads of corporations, university presidents, journalists, artists, professors, and teachers. Bose Corporation founder Amar Bose, actor John Lithgow, composer Philip Glass, opera singer Renee Fleming and economist Joseph Stiglitz are among notable former grantees. On Wednesday, Sept. 19, join us for the Ocean Science Lecture Series with Troy Rice of the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program speaking on the resources of the Indian River Lagoon and why it merits special designation as an Estuary of National Significance. The off-season lecture series is presented monthly on a Wednesday at 7 p.m. An opportunity to meet the speaker, appetizer buffet and cash bar follow the presentation. Momentum is building for FAU's participation in the 2012 Heart Walk, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 29, in downtown West Palm Beach. A new yoga time is now being offered from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. Get healthy with FAU Yoga! The first class is FREE and join any time. Fall semester classes will run through Dec. 7. FAU's Adams Center for Entrepreneurship is empowering promising entrepreneurs and ambitious small business owners with an innovative, fast-paced course that includes creating a business plan, tips on finding money, and tips on designing the right operation for success. The Jack Miller Constitution Day Essay Contest is an annual competition designed to challenge upper-division college students to analyze issues relating to the Constitution of the United States, confronting them in today's complex world. Students are encouraged to write thought-provoking, critical essays that raise questions, single out issues and provide rational arguments for the role of the Constitution in the civil life of the United States.

Essay submission is open only to full-time undergraduate juniors and seniors at FAU. All submissions should be sent electronically to Professor Clevis Headley, at headley@fau.edu. The deadline for submission is Friday, Sept. 7. Please include your contact information (FAU e-mail) when sending your submission. All submissions to the essay contest are judged anonymously. A distinguished committee of faculty will review the essays and a jury will choose the winners. Please note that no manuscripts will be returned.

Winning essays will receive the following awards:
- A Certificate of Recognition issued by the Office of Undergraduate Studies.
- A $250 stipend to purchase textbooks for Spring 2013.

The students whose essays are chosen as winners will read those essays on Sept. 17, as part of Constitution Day.

FAU's University Galleries in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters present the "New Art: South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artists Fellowship" exhibition from Saturday, Sept. 22 through Saturday, Dec. 15. The exhibition will be presented in both the Schmidt Center Gallery and the Ritter Art Gallery on the Boca Raton campus,. There will be an opening reception with music and a cash bar on Saturday, September 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Miami-based band Gold Dust Lounge will provide music during the second half of the event at the Ritter Art Gallery.

The exhibition presents 11 artists from Florida's five southeastern counties who have won a highly competitive and generous annual grant awarded by the South Florida Cultural Consortium. This year's South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship winners are Nellie Appleby (Monroe County), Domingo Castillo (Miami Dade), Clifton Childree (Miami Dade), Jiae Hwang (Miami Dade), Nicolas Lobo (Miami Dade), Ernesto Oroza (Miami Dade), Tom Scicluna (Miami Dade), Eric Landes (Broward County), Mark Moormann (Broward County), John Sanchez (Broward County) and Phillip Estlund (Palm Beach County). The artists are selected through a two-step judging process by first a regional panel and then a national panel of visual arts professionals. Over 300 artists apply each year, in part because the grant award for each artist of either $15,000 or $7,500 is among the nation's highest for individual artists.

The Jaffe Book Arts Gallery in the Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus presents "River of Grass." The exhibition is an homage to Marjory Stoneman Douglas and her seminal book, "The Everglades: River of Grass," and a record of Dorothy Simpson Krause's time here at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts last spring as JCBA's inaugural Helen M. Salzberg Artist in Residence. The Everglades is one of America's most unusual rivers, 40 miles wide and over 100 miles long, slow moving and ranging from a few inches to a few feet in depth. Only half its original size, the Everglades has been largely destroyed to meet the demands of urban and agricultural growth. To capture the grandeur of this unique region, Krause combined photography, painting and printmaking techniques on surfaces as diverse as aluminum and fresco. The resulting images focus on the beauty of this rare ecosystem in its pristine reflectivity and, in the eroded surfaces, its fragility.

Clinical Research Studies at FAU's College of Medicine is conducting a clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. The Language Development Lab, under the direction of Professor Erika Hoff, is conducting a federally funded study of early monolingual and bilingual development. We are looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning Spanish at home and at least one parent was born in a Spanish-speaking country. For participating, you will receive $150 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay for your time at each visit. If you complete this study through the age of 5 years, you will receive a total of $1,000 in gift cards.

We are also looking for 24- to 30-month-old children who are learning only English at home. For participating, you will receive $50 in gift cards and your child will get a gift and a t-shirt. With your permission, we will contact you again every 6 months until your child is 5 years old. We will pay you for your time at each visit. If you complete the study through the age of 5 years you will receive a total of $400 in gift cards. We plan to study children's language development from 2 years and 6 months to 5 years.

The purpose of these studies is to gain a better understanding of how language develops during this period. We will come to your home or you can come to our playroom on the Davie campus of Florida Atlantic University or to our office on the Boca Raton campus -- whichever is easier for you. The Communication Disorders Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education building on the Boca Raton campus and provides speech, language and hearing diagnostic and therapy services -- including accent reduction therapy -- to children and adults. Services are available Monday through Friday during every semester on a space-available basis. Appointments for diagnostic or treatment services may be made by calling Maria at 561-297-2258. Payment can now be made by VISA or MasterCard.

The clinic offers Stroke Support and a Stuttering Support groups, each meeting once a month. Interested parties should contact the clinic for details. FAU faculty and staff members and their families receive a 50 percent discount for all services. Full-time FAU students receive a 50 percent discount for evaluations and then are charged $10 per treatment session.
